She can’t help but feel like the other shoe needs to drop. Niko can’t just be gone like this. Her death was too simple, too mundane, as mundane as getting stabbed by a witch’s magic knife could be. It was like she was just here one moment and gone the next, like a candle being simply snuffed out. Niko burned brighter than the sun, she couldn’t be extinguished as simply as that. Crystal doesn’t accept that that’s it for her, that Niko gets her body shipped off to Japan and the rest of them are just supposed to move on.

Edwin stands and makes his way to his bookshelves. “Would you like to read something a bit more cheerful?”
“Yes, please,” Crystal says, truthfully, and extends her hands for the heavy tome that he gives her.
They sit in silence together for another few moments, and then - “What the fuck, Edwin, in what world is ‘A Dissertation on Modern Age Poisons’ ‘more cheerful’?”
