Ruby had laid out the rules, more and more smug as she had gone on. “So if Regina wears a red dress, you have to pick a fight with her.” Emma hadn’t questioned that one. “But if she wears blue, you have to give her a compliment. And if she wears grey, you gotta call her Your Majesty.” She’d been a little drunk, too, enough that she’d gotten bold. “Light colors mean you have to tell her whatever’s on your mind. Whatever.” Her eyes had narrowed in ominous delight. “And for black…for black, you have to flirt with her.”

The water splattering off of her feet is running off a pale brown, which makes Vi frown at the sight. There must be grime from years before caked onto her—with such few options for cleanliness, it’s not like it was ever the first thing on her mind.
Get clean. That’s her first prerogative, since Caitlyn’s mother left them to their own devices for the rest of the day until the council meeting that night. Look presentable.

Vi’s not entirely sure what emboldens her at that point. Maybe it’s the ridiculousness of the situation: in a brothel, a fancy Piltovan hides from her fancy colleagues in a decidedly unfancy storage cupboard.
Or maybe it’s the way that Cait’s fingers are digging into her hipbones, desperate. She tilts her chin up petulantly.

Morning comes with the dawning realization that this is, in fact, their life now. Not quite on the run, not quite safe, all of their worst nightmares come true. It also comes with light, somehow filtering through the small windows lining the wall just below the ceiling. The smell of clean, as Vi starts to realize the two of them had shifted in the night. She’d turned around, at some point, and she currently has her arms wrapped around Caitlyn’s middle, her face pressed against Caitlyn’s sternum.
Half asleep, she burrows deeper, lips against Caitlyn’s skin. Her legs shift, twisting in the sheets, and the only thing that drags her from her pseudo-awake state is a soft gasp from the woman next to her — Vi freezes.
