“Where exactly are you headed with this?” The woman on the other end of the line sounded suspicious.
“Well, I found a dead sphereite out in no man’s land… and now there’s a pint-sized trash beast following me around. Here kid, say hi.” Enjin leaned down closer to his level, thumbing that weird collar.
Rudo gave it his best shot and let out a terrible metallic shriek. Enjin pulled back away, grimacing.
“So, yeah. I’m bringing him home. Make sure everybody knows not to kill on sight, ‘kay?”
or
Rudo dies before Enjin can find him after the fall. He’s too angry to stay that way.

She should have gotten more. “There’s talk about someone falling from the sphere again.” The other two raised silent eyebrows and she shrugged at the unasked questions. “Dunno. I believe some traffickers claim they found a Sphereite, alive, apparently.”
Zanka scoffed. “Sounds pretty fake if you ask me. Probably just want to squeeze money out of people and end up giving them a skeleton they found in No Man’s Land. Who survives a fall from the sky?”
Riyo shrugged again. “It’s just rumors.”
Enjin rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “I like rumors,” he said. “Should probably go check it out.”

“Joel,” Ellie says, voice absolutely devastated. Her popsicle–held so far for ten minutes without taking a single lick–is dripping down her wrist, and he takes it from her after a small power struggle and puts it back in her cup.
“Yeah, baby?” He asks, wiping the melted popsicle off of her skin with a damp washcloth.
“They-they took my ‘ppendix,” she sniffles, voice breaking. “Joel, they took it.”
The words make her burst into renewed tears, and he tosses the now mildly pink cloth into the sink. He can’t sit her up all the way, not until he can be sure her stitches won’t pop, but he cups her little–damp–face between his hands, rubbing his thumbs across her cheeks. “That’s okay,” he soothes. “They were supposed to do that. It was giving you a bad time, remember?”
She blinks at him, nose twitching as her breath hitches.
“Nooooo,” she says, face crumpling, the word drawn out into a squeak. “Joel…they-they took my brain, too.”

On the sixth snatched lunch, he decides to wait and watch. It’s childish, but they’d finally had help in so work had gone quickly enough that he could work on making cuts for the cabinet framing.
And it just so happens to offer the perfect viewpoint to watch his lunch bag on the passenger side of his truck without being immediately visible.
He waits in the hours before lunch ready for a fight, ready to storm out and confront his little shit of a little brother. He knows it’s Tommy. He knows it.
And then a little head with a brown ponytail sticks out of a bush, and he starts to wonder what he knows after all.
The girl looks around furtively, darts forward, jumps up to get her arm over the open window, makes a basket of her shirt, shakes out the contents, tosses the bag back in, and darts off, disappearing into the bushes once more.
All while he stands on the sidelines, saw still in hand.
