Mello eventually gets up, buttoning up her pants, grabbing her leather jacket, and giving Near a… look. Near can’t read it at all, Mello’s expression is carefully reserved and completely blank. Mello puts on her pitch black combat boots and ties the laces, all the while ignoring Near’s peering gaze.
“Let’s just,” Mello says. “This never happened, OK?”

Summary
Mello knows that he's not perfect. In fact, he's far from that. It's why he keeps everyone at bay, watching the world go on from a distance. After all, someone as awful as him has no right to try and take space in it.
By chance, he reunites with Near, the boy he bullied back in elementary school. In an attempt to clear up his remaining unfinished business, Mello decides he's going to do whatever he can to make it up to him.

He reached a hand, slowly, into the pocket of his jeans and pulled out a picture. He told Mello he’d given him the only picture of himself in existence, but that was a lie. He’d made a copy and kept the original. He’d written Dear Mello on the back of it and nothing else. He planned on returning the real photograph when (if) he ever finished the note. He didn’t know what to write on it then; he had so much to say now. Cruelly, as life always is, it didn’t matter anymore. Mello would never get to read it anyway.
He traced the outline of Mello’s face with his finger as a tear softly landed and rolled off. “Dear Mello,” he whispered. “Dear Mello…there was so much left unsaid.”
“There doesn’t have to be.”

“There’s a ninety-nine percent probability.” He nodded. “And yes, I spat it out a few minutes ago."

Summary
Two years after the end of the Kira investigation, Near reluctantly agrees to investigate a series of murders in Denver. What he's expecting is a dull, uninteresting case that he'll solve before the plane has even landed. Instead, he gets a killer who seems to have no rhyme or reason to their actions yet somehow evades capture anyway and still has time to send him cryptic messages with horrible grammar.
Mello has been lying low for the past two years, but when he hears about the serial murders, he heads to the city to investigate. Normally, he wouldn't bother, but there's something different about this case— Near may be in more danger than he realizes.
Not that Mello actually cares. That would be ridiculous.
