Draxum taught them everything they know, trained them to fight, tried to instill within them with his own ideals and values. He raised Three and Four to be his perfect soldiers, obedient warriors at his beck and call.
Lee and Dee can’t stay with him anymore.
They know if they do, they’ll have to do things they can’t, don’t, agree with. So they have to go, have to try to make their own life away from what Draxum wants and expects of them, and in the process, find their family is a lot bigger than they could have ever imagined.
(AKA, yet another Separated AU. Loosely follows canon for the most part)

In Donatello's world, there were a few constants:
1: Don't leave leftovers at the table unless you're fine with Leo/Mikey/Raph licking the plate clean.
2: Every Saturday, you will engage in your thumb war with Leo for eldest twin rights. And you will WIN this time, because a four week losing streak is just embarrassing.
And 3: Donatello was the most intelligent being to ever live.
While that may be hubris--Donnie wouldn't deny that--the softshell had examined all the records, taken all the online tests, had even hacked into a few Korean colleges, and as far as Donnie could tell, his brain took the cake.
Therefore, every decision he made was the inarguable RIGHT DECISION. It was just logic. And, yes, that was including his decision to bring that oozesquito he'd found into his lab for a little studying. The bite he'd gotten was... just an outlier. And besides, nothing had happened. He was already mutated anyway; the mutagen was ineffective.
Sure, yeah, his health had rapidly declined in the two days since then, but... there was NO WAY that had anything to do with that.
Because Donnie was smarter than that.
And everything would be... fine.

"Raph." Leo groans, tired and defeated as his shoulders slump. The pink goo slithers further past his scarf; it must hurt, the way the branches dig into the soft flesh of Leo's neck, it must feel terrible and cold.
He swallows, eyes burning. "There's got to be another way."
"There is no other way," Leo tells him in what feels like the millionth time, and a part of Raph knows that already, that there's only this option, this terrible, terrible option that he cannot bear to choose.
But he has to, spirits above, does he have to, because there is nothing else for him to do, the camp is so, so far, their comms broke, their panic buttons pushed, and they both know it'll take at least three hours for help to arrive; Raph has to follow his stupidly loving little brother and do this.
"I'm sorry," Leo starts, apologetic, hand trembling from where it rests on the stretched fabric of Raph's belt, giving a grounding squeeze every so and so, betraying the strong stature of Master Leonardo, and Raph gets it all too much, because he's scared too.
-(OR: in an AU where the Kraang come just after the turtles defeat the Shredder, the same apocalypse with even younger heroes, they lose their face-man first.)

As he pulls further and further away from his brothers trying to make amends for his past mistakes, he finds his world tipped upside down once again when someone shows up asking for help. It might be inconvenient, but it might wind up being exactly what Leo needs.

A gust of air left his lungs as suddenly he was free falling. The world spun in a haze of static that jittered through his very bones, the piercing cold wind as he fell, spinning to who-knows-where. Orange, orange and gold and blue and purple and red and yellow in a dizzying array surrounded him wholly. The sky was beautiful around them in the sheet of rippling clouds that completely covered the sky and reflected the gorgeous sunset like a blanket falling over the city. For a breathless moment, Mikey was starstruck.
He could hear his brothers’ screams. He felt his body losing mass, then regaining, his form glitching in and out. He could see them spinning through the air, their bodies flashing in and out in sporadic bursts like him. Then Donnie completely fizzled out and didn’t come back.
