    Summary

Jason proves himself (and makes a mess of things).
    ***

Jason hits the exit button with more force than necessary. He already watched Dick’s quarterly tests, per Bruce’s instructions. Dick scored better. Consistently.

“Master Jason, you have shown consistent improvement with every test, I’m sure you will—”

“You’ll do better next time,” Bruce interrupts, eyes on the monitor.

Jason swallows, his throat tight. “And if I don’t?”

    “Then you don’t.”

    Summary

When times get tough—as they often do—Kirishima prefers to work things out with his punching bag. But he zones out and bloodies his knuckles, and then Bakugou shows up, and now he's getting his hands patched up. In his dorm. With just the two of them. Alone.
    ***
Kirishima walks to the door and opens it—the sight of Bakugou punching him in the heart. And stomach. And ears, too, as those ring incessantly, but maybe it’s the adrenaline leaving his body; it’s both relieved and terrified of Bakugou, oscillating between the two.

Bakugou looks at him, eyes drooped and half-lidded in an unimpressed way. His eyes shoot down to Kirishima’s hands, soaking wet and dripping a water and blood solution—the water bottle in one hand.

“I have bad aim.” Kirishima says, then adding, “You rushing me made me thirsty, and I was so rushed I spilled it.”

“And you cut yourself while drinking water?”

“It’s pretty cold,” Kirishima supplies, but he lacks the creativity to elaborate and explain the absurdity of his statement, so the lie sits there, in the air, between them.

    Summary

After a heated discussion, Peter runs into the woods, has a conversation with Tony, and considers failure.
    ***
“Gotta say all of it was a total trainwreck. Your argument construction skills are in dire need.”

    “Uh-huh, sure. You have glasses?”

    “Overstimulated?”

    “Yep.”

Head ducked down, Peter holds his hand out and titanium wires cool his fingers. His eyes closed, Peter places them on his face and opens them. The stabbing dulls into poking. Peter looks up at Tony—dressed in sweats and a V-neck sweater, a casual ensemble that shocks Peter as much as when he first saw it, arriving at the lakehouse—and he postures a kind of annoying amusement that prickles Peter’s “Tony sucks” sense.

“Well then,” Peter starts, stumbling to his feet, Tony catching him, “I’ll get out of your hair.” And he turns around and begins crawling up the tree.

“Peter Benjamin Parker you will not climb up that tree.”

Mouth agape, Peter whips his head to Tony. “I will not be middle-named.”

“Then don’t pull stunts that warrant being middle-named. Now get down or I swear to God I will get my rocket boots and bring you down myself.”

“Did you just call them rocket boots?”

    Summary

Throughout the years, tragedies, and conflicts, they have this; tangerines. Sometimes that's more than enough.
    ***
This is by far Bruce’s most evil punishment. Dick laughs at groundings, confiscations, probations, and anything of the sort. But this? Horrific. Dick hopes he collapses from heat stroke so he can rub it in Bruce’s stupid face. Better yet, he hopes both of them get heat stroke from this so he’ll have to suffer too. All of this because he ‘disobeyed’ Bruce on a mission—it wasn’t disobedience, he was trying to show Bruce that he’s perfectly capable of tackling harder situations and staying calm under pressure. The only person who cracked afterward is Bruce. Buttface.

Dick wipes his arm across his forehead, groaning. “Can’t I take a break? This is horrible!”

“I could always add another hour.”

“I could always add another hour.”  Dick mocks.

Bruce sighs. Looking between his legs, Dick sees the remnants of a man crumbling under a beating sun and a relentless 13-year-old boy. Good. Alfred recounted tales of Bruce’s rebellious phase in hushed whispers in the kitchen and unused studies. Dick’s happy to be his karma. For Alfred, of course.

    Summary

They’re visiting Jason a week after the funeral. It was Dick’s idea, of course—not because he’s the only one with a heart (Alfred has to operate in similar emotional syncing with Bruce, to Bruce’s shame), but because his response to grief carried proactive and communal measures, something Bruce doesn’t have the heart to train out of him. Like he could in the first place.

Dick dragged Bruce out of the Batcave, donning his suit, and shoved Bruce into his study, telling him to dress. A suit lay on the back of his desk chair. Black jacket and slacks, white shirt, no tie. The bare minimum, but something. Bruce is a cavernous space, containing nothing, but he puts on the suit. For his boy. For both of them.

    Summary

They didn't fight. For once though, Bakugo realizes he crossed a line. He does what anyone does for their closest friend: apologize.

    Or well, he tries.
    ***
Kirishima looks up from his textbook, blank. He’s cross-legged in bed, in basketball shorts, wet hair dripping on his shoulders. They’re bare. Isn’t it cold? Idiot.

    “Hey, what’s up?”

Bakugo maintains eye contact, trying to remember what he’s supposed to say. He runs through the articles he read. "5 ways to apologize." "How to think before you speak!" "A Guide to Taking Accountability." His eyes fixate on Kirishima’s shoulders—because they’re carved, a little hypnotic, and because Bakugo can’t bring himself to continue looking into Kirishima’s eyes—and his face heats, the guilt turning into an embarrassment. At the situation. At his inability to not be a fucking idiot. At how hard it is to not be a dick and apologize to one of the only people that continually offers him grace.

“...Sorry. For being a dick earlier.” Bakugo vomits out, somehow. Thank fuck.

“Oh. Yeah, it’s fine,” Kirishima says, looking back down at his textbook. And then, “I’m used to it.”

    Summary

Following the blip, Peter hasn't been the same. But No one has, and Peter isn't calling himself special. Tony—who's the most different, and currently giving Peter the most grief—drags Peter to a Charity event for networking opportunities, and things go sideways from there.
    ***
Peter’s done the tango enough times with rich kids from his school to get when he’s being looked down on. It’s in their eyes and mouths—the way they crinkle and curl and twitch at him, the micro-expressions that reveal the between-the-lines condescension. He doesn’t care.

“Tell me, is that suit rented?”

Peter shakes his head at the older woman across from him, gritting his teeth, his smile in place. He doesn’t care. “No, actually—”

“He bought it all himself,” Stark says, clapping Peter on the back, grin sharkish. “In his defense I made him with his first paycheck from me, as you and I both know that in higher circles people can be well, tightwads about apparel, for lack of a better term.” Stark takes a long look at her, up and down, just like that investor did. “Well, maybe you know, Pippy.”

    Summary

It's another morning after, except this time it's different from Bruce and Clark's usual mornings. And while Bruce would rather let it fester, Clark is quick to confront it.
    ***
Bruce comes out putting on cufflinks. They’re plain, sterling silver, but work with his ensemble. Charcoal gray suit, black under shirt—unbuttoned as to keep to his Wayne signature—and gelled hair. It’s unremarkable, almost lazy, and lavish enough to clue someone in on what they need to know. Bruce Wayne is aloof and without care.

    “Bruce—”

    “Clark,”

“I think we should talk about last night.”

    Summary

It's been three days since Bruce was shot while protecting Jason. It's also Father's Day, and it's the first time Jason's got him something.
    ***
Rationally speaking it’s not a big deal. Bruce has never been upset about getting hurt before. It has happened more times Jason can count; Bruce protecting him and getting hurt by proxy. It just hasn’t happened in a while, and Bruce hasn’t gotten hurt protecting Dick the whole time Jason’s known them, and so the whole thing is more of a screw up on his part than a ‘newbie’ making a mistake. He’s been Robin for almost four years. That should be enough time.

    Summary

It's a normal early morning. Except Clark's had a nightmare.
    ***
Morning was just beginning to start—the overcast from the night before lingered, as usual, and so the waking sun had no vibrant backdrop. Just a devoted shield of gray; covering all and showing no signs of stopping.

It didn’t take any effort to go to him. The bed dipped under his knee, and Clark looked to him as soon as Bruce had a hand on him, a small smile gracing his face.

    “Hi.”

Bruce didn’t respond, kept his hand on the back of Clark’s neck, and let it drift up to his hair. Unstyled. Messy. Knotted. He was in his pajamas too. Strange.

    Summary

Following the trip to Europe Peter is having nightmares. Which is normal, except they're different. Instead of abstract versions of what happened things are suddenly lucid; he's been essentially re-living past traumas for months, and the dreams don't even touch on what happened in Europe. It isn't until Beck finally makes an appearance in one of these nightmares that Peter realizes maybe there's more unfinished business than he thought.
    ***
His breaths quickened, it was getting harder for air to get in. In and out. Breaths by the sixes—

Wet hands. He had fallen in a puddle. He looked into the water and his reflection was changed. He was Spider-man now. The original one, the one Tony made fun of. Underoos. It was covered in blood. Torn and battered. The blood wasn’t his.

No. No no no no no—

Thick green smoke rose from the ground. It masked everything and he could only see a few feet in front of him. The sky was gone. Only the graves and him were left. Alone. He whipped his head around. Left and right. Nothing. His breathing turned ragged. There was nothing behind him either. He turned his head back and—

    He was there.

    Summary

Following the blip Peter's been fine. Completely and totally okay. That is until he gets stabbed and hides the oncoming infection from everyone, but even then. He has it under control, it'll be okay. What isn't okay is everyone else; it's all changed.
    ***
He sparks the lighter once, twice, and a flame emerges—casting a warm circle around him. The needle burns black. For extra precaution he dunks it in the alcohol and listens to it sizzle on the first dip. His hands shake a little too much to thread anything, but after enough tries he manages.

    Now comes the shit part.

Slow, drawn out agony. May taught him the basics of suturing years ago; on sliced oranges that still had the skin and with practiced strokes that looked perfect compared to his clumsy ones. It’ll be messy but he should be able to manage. What’s the rule, two stitches per centimeter?

He nearly passes out on the first stitch.

A bout of dizziness fills his head as he pulls the needle through his skin. Saliva sits on his tongue and he swallows it down, praying he doesn’t vomit. That would be so rude to Lena.

    Summary

Going on 36 hours without sleep while trying to solve a case, Bruce goes outside to clear his head. An (expected) visitor arrives.
    ***
Bruce would take Dick and Jason out there years back. Early in the mornings, when the sun was beginning to crest over the horizon and the grass was covered in dew. In the summertime Dick would joke about swimming in the pond. Once Jason actually pushed him in. A shaky sigh escaped him, eyes closed. His head pounded. He didn’t deserve them.

There was a whoosh in the air. Bruce opened his eyes and saw the pond rippling, the surface of it touched by a foot. A floating foot. Another sigh. He began to massage his temples. Hallucinations weren’t supposed to occur until 48 hours, which meant Clark was actually floating over his abandoned pond.

    He didn’t deserve him.

“You could at least pretend to be happy to see me.”

    Summary

Peter has a lot of anxiety over losing someone as Spider-man at school. After getting overwhelmed, he hides in the bathroom and calls Tony, since he might understand.
    ***
What happened was kept locked away in him. No one knew, not even Ned or May who he told everything to. They’d try to comfort him, to tell him it wasn’t his fault and he had no way of knowing what would’ve happened. It’d be soothing and kind and he’d breathe a little easier. Comfort wasn’t deserved. He needed to tell someone who understood, who wouldn’t try to reassure him.

Pulling his phone out of his hoodie, he scrolled and hit a contact. It rang. Everything that had happened was now torrential, washing over him in trepidation and his skin was tighter around his bones for it.

“Aren’t you supposed to be in school?”

    Summary

Peter has an essay due in a few hours that he hasn't started, and it was assigned last week. Tony lends a hand and some reassurance.
    ***
Hands open and closed. Over and over. He mouthed the lyrics to the song, hummed a little as he watched Tony. His chest—flaring and hot—was beginning to tighten, like the heat was sucking up all the oxygen in the room and he was left breathless. Open and closed. Sweaty palms.

Tony was working on some rare engine for an old car. The noise of the torque wrench twisting sent a shiver down Peter’s spine. He hated it. It was a terrible sound. Nails on a chalkboard. Velvet under fingernails. He said nothing.

Tony glanced over his shoulder. “This is the third time you’ve been over here in half an hour. Need something? Or is my presence just that magnetic?”

Peter rolled his eyes and blinked. They burned, he had been staring too long. “No. Just…” The words were there in front of him. He couldn’t grasp them. It was taking too long. “Sorry.” He said automatically.

    “No worries.”

An evening of backhanded compliments and violin music, Bruce and Jason take another veiled insult as a compliment.
    ***
    “Jason, over here!”

Eyes coasting across the room, they zeroed in on Bruce who was waving him over. Jason sighed and handed Dick the cocktail. “Hold my shrimp.”

It hurt a little to paste a smile on so hastily. He made his way over as quick as possible, his gaze moving from the hardwood floors to Bruce and keeping them off the guests. Their eyes were stuck on him.

Bruce smiled big and wide, pulling him into his side. “This is my youngest, Jason.”

The man Bruce was talking to narrowed his eyes a little at his arrival. Up and down. Judging. Jason felt a little sick. “What a…bright young boy.” He said, smirking and smarmy. “He must take after his father.”

Peter, May, and Happy visit the Stark's at their lake-house weeks after the battle.
    ***
The last time he saw Tony they were on a battlefield and Peter thought Tony was going to die. It had only been a few weeks, and he was tentatively moving through life the way the rest of the world was—equipped with numbness and perseverance that was weak at its foundations.

He walked to the backdoor. It’d stay with him. The numbness would remain and he’d smile and hug Tony and it would be fine because it could’ve been worse. It could’ve been worse—

    “Hey kiddo.”

Following the aftermath of Peter getting kidnapped and escaping, he's stuck injured in Upstate New York in the winter time. A deadly combination.
    ***
In the distance he saw the black outlining of a large, squarish building; something that gleamed adorning the top. Maybe he could stay there. He was supposed to do something. A weight slipped from his fingers and fell into white. It was a phone.

Tony. He was supposed to call Tony.

Shaking fingers. They were numb now too. Each pressed button was a blessing.

The phone connected. A miracle. “Alright who the fuck keeps calling this number—”

    “Tony.” Peter slurred.

    A quiet confession. Something shared.
    ***
She’s never felt this way before.

Something in the show happens. She hears Steph’s intake of breath and her hand tug Cass’s sweater, when she opens her eyes Steph looks dazzled. She turns back to the screen. “Cass, look!”

It’s a big love confession. A man and a woman. He’s…he’s holding her. They look in love. There’s a tight feeling in her chest, looking at Steph makes it worse.

Steph sighs. “I wish someone would love me like that.”

“I do.” Cass says. It’s simpler saying it aloud.
