Summary
Fyodor is eight, when he meets Dazai. He’s at a chess tournament and Dazai is the only one who has made it worth it. Made it interesting. He’s the only one who is playing at the same level as Fyodor. Fyodor loves chess but he hasn’t felt challenged in what seems like a long time. Not until Dazai, that is.
They’re in the final game. Dazai and Fyodor are two children lost in a world that has nothing to do with anyone but them. Dazai has one of his eyes covered with a bandage. His hair is almost but exactly not the same color as Fyodor’s. He plays aggressively and recklessly and so carefully measured Fyodor feels it all the way to his toes, swinging in their too tight shoes, unable to touch the ground.
They draw.
“I’m Dazai.” Dazai says afterward. Like Fyodor, English is slightly stilted on Dazai’s tongue, rounded awkwardly around different syllables than it should be.
“I’m Fyodor.” Fyodor responds. Dazai mouths Fyodor’s name to himself. “It’s Russian.” Fyodor explains quietly, used to other children not being able to say his name, teasing him.
“Fyodor.” Dazai repeats. “You’re good at chess.” He adds bluntly.
Fyodor feels something stronger than happiness, quiet and content, low in his soul.

This whole thing had been Dazai’s idea, of course; he’d wanted to go out because fuck drinking in the cabin tonight, for some reason. That reason became very clear when he immediately started trying to pick up the bartender, and as much as Chuuya tended to enjoy Dazai’s little endeavors he really wasn’t in the mood to share today.

Summary
“What’s wrong with him?” Akutagawa asks but is ignored. Double-black is a messy bond held together by threads Akutagawa can’t see— they don’t take kindly to outsiders trying to step on the bounds of it.
When Dazai falls forward on wobbly legs, it’s reflex that has Akutagawa reaching forward to try and catch him. Chuuya snags Dazai back up before that can happen.

There was a tantalizing grace to the lean lines of Dazai’s body, something in the well-practiced casual elegance with which he held himself that made Chuuya crazy, nearly ravenous for him. It was intentional, of course, and targeted directly at Chuuya, and he felt like the worst kind of idiot for being taken in by it but he had made peace long ago with the fact that Dazai was the strategist and for all Chuuya’s disdain at Dazai’s antics, all his frustration at being constantly left out of plans or, worse, manipulated into them—for all of it, Chuuya always seemed to follow Dazai anyway.
Chuuya goes on a business trip to a picturesque mountain town during the sultry height of summer. Guess who shows up.
