Summary
In Ling Wen’s name, the second character is “文.” There are many definitions for this common character, but they all seem to revolve around literature: character, script, writing, language, culture, literary, civil.
However, the character has one connotation that Ling Wen hates, and that is ‘gentle.’
For a woman to achieve the status she had in the immortal realm, she long ago had cast aside any gentleness that she may have once embodied.
Gentleness is not a marketable skill in the heavenly realm. It is not something mortals would pray to her for. It is looked down on.
In all her years of living, whenever she has been gentle, she has been squashed under the toe of another, taken advantage of and abused.
However, before she had received that name she hated so much, she lived a simple life. And, in that dying kingdom of Xuli, she sold shoes to survive.

This work is a one-shot depicting Ling Wen's (TGCF) backstory before becoming a civil god. The events in this one-shot are a prequel to the events of the books. Minor spoilers about the backstory of Ling Wen, no major spoilers.

Eddie didn't know what the feeling in his gut was as he stared. On his wrist, in a slanted scribble, were two words. He blinked, caught entirely off-guard, a brief flash of nausea rising in his gut. He'd finally gotten it. He'd started thinking it'd be his birthday before he got it, but that's absolutely what it was, right? That's what he was looking at?

Richie stared at his no-longer unblemished wrist, the dark lines that formed the letters neat and stark against his skin, blurred by his sleepiness and the tears gathered in his eyes. His chest felt heavy and cold and as he drew in a shuddering, hitching breath, he lost the battle with it all. He couldn't stop himself from dissolving into tears fast.

Quirks define who you are. Every child is elated to discover their quirk and find out who they truly are. This happens around the ripe age of four years old. Some are natural-born heroes. Others are perfect for other occupations such as baking or being an artist. With such a high hope for the future that a quirk brings, one would think they would be happy to discover theirs and reveal just how useful they can be.
But…
What happens when your quirk dictates you as nothing more than a doll to be used by others?Izuku Midoriya found out four-years-old that not all people are created equally.
He found out when he drew the short end of the stick of luck and ended up with a quirk worse than quirklessness.
He's dealt with it long enough.Now it's time for Izuku to take hold of his own strings and stop letting others control his life. He won't be a doll forever.
