    Summary

As much as Harrow wanted to say otherwise, a large part of her was drawn towards the red-haired girl who sat opposite her in Church. Maybe God was glaring down at her, or maybe it was Him that gave her the crooked heart that wanted Gideon so badly, but either way, she wasn't about to ignore that desire.

    Summary

Gideon shifts her weight again, looking nothing short of mortified. “It’s just. Coronabeth—she… she wants…” Gideon makes an emphatic gesture with her hands here that Harrow can’t quite parse. “And you know what it was like on the Ninth. It’s not like I’m exactly experienced in… and I don’t want to make a fool of myself when…”

Just like that, everything comes together all at once. She realizes exactly what Gideon is asking for help with. The room suddenly feels smaller, hotter. Harrow tugs at her collar before she can stop herself, feeling suffocated. Gideon’s mouth snaps closed the second she realizes that Harrow has figured out what she’s saying, flashing expectant puppy dog eyes at her that make her feel a little dizzy. “So you think that we should-”

“I think that we could,” Gideon corrects and Harrow kind of wants to hit her; it’s all semantics. “I think it would be mutually beneficial."

    Summary

“Gideon,” said Palamedes with the patience of a saint, “the rules are the rules. It wouldn’t be fair if I changed them just for you. In a well ordered society—

“It’s not a well ordered society.” Gideon knew where that was going, and she certainly didn’t have the time. She slapped a slip of paper onto the counter and said, “It’s secret santa.”

And there lay the source of all of her problems: handwritten in a script so neat and precise it could have been printed, Harrowhark Nonagesimus. And everyone knew that Gideon and Harrow hated each other.

So what if they had started taking smoke breaks together? So what if Harrow had helped her fold shirts just last week, in a store she didn’t even work in? So what if Harrow had laughed as the two of them did Jagerbombs at Palamedes’ Halloween party, the glint of her fake fangs flashing invitingly in the orange party lights? They hated each other. The two of them would both work in the mall until one of them inevitably strangled the other with her bare hands, and Gideon wouldn’t have it any other way.

Except that lately, Gideon had started to like Harrow.

Which made that slip of paper a fucking problem.

    Summary

Harrow Nonagesimus approached the chair with the same enthusiasm of one stepping up to the executioner’s block. Just like those same damned siouls, she found herself running through the events of her life, trying to find the thread of ill fortune running through her past that had led to her current predicament. Others might have found themselves praying, begging like a child for the attention and forgiveness of a merciful God, but Harrow knew better. There was no God — and if there was, it certainly wasn’t merciful.

Because if there was a merciful God, Gideon wouldn’t have a giant fucking needle in her hand.
