What if Simon was trapped in a time loop?
“Convict! Everything alright? Is the sub okay?”
“Is this a test?” Simon asks, voice wavering. The pause hangs heavy for a moment. The depth meter drops. The SM-13 groans under the weight and pressure of the blood around it. Simon’s eyes dart from the porthole to the intercom.
“This is the first time this sub has been used, yes.” Ava says finally. “Why? Everything holding up alright? I assure you the weld is—”
“A test for me. Me." he jabs a nervous thumb against his sternum, leaning toward the speaker, pleading, as if she can see him. As if that would make any difference. “Am I being tested? Is this some C.O.I. thing? Some kind of sick rehab?”
“...if you want to see it that way. Just… finish this and you'll have your freedom.”
Simon swallows hard, turning back to the controls he's learned so well, cobwebs of fear prickling in the back of his mind. A question flits through his thoughts that he doesn't dare vocalize.
What did I do to deserve this?

The details of the job are pretty vague, but in the end, Simon agrees. It's a chance. At freedom. Life. No matter how slim or ridiculous the thought is in a dying universe. He doesn't know what to expect, but he certainly isn't prepared to wake up months later on a small ship with a crew of people that leave him with more questions than answers.
