When the door swooshed open, he half thought he had been pranked or the chime had been malfunctioning, because he could see no one waiting for him on the other side of the entryway. Then a small sniffle drew his attention downward, and there at thigh-level he saw a pair of big blue eyes peering up at him, tears threatening to spill over. The eyes were not disembodied, of course, but attached to the small cherub-like face of a very young humanoid boy.

He should have recognized that sound.
Obi-Wan had screamed like that at Master Qui-Gon’s funeral, when everyone had walked away.
(Obi-Wan has PTSD from his time on Melida/Daan. He's triggered during the clone wars and Mace Windu looks after him while Anakin tries to understand why Obi-Wan will let Mace do this, but not him.)

Their meeting, their first missions, the recent developments, it had all been so eventful that Obi-Wan kept forgetting they barely knew each other. That was why his choice on Melida/Daan had hit them so hard, he knew. Because it had just started to feel like they were settling into a routine together, into a new normal.
Instead Obi-Wan wasn’t sure what normal was anymore. It wasn’t the Temple as it had been in his initiate years. It wasn’t his burgeoning apprenticeship with Qui-Gon. It wasn’t missions or new planets or even the rote cycle of struggle and death on a wartorn planet. It was nothing, right now. It was nightmares and numbness and flinching and forgetfulness and being both comforted and wary in Qui-Gon’s presence.
A day in the life of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn during their probational period, after the events of Melida/Daan and the mission to Telos. A story of trauma and recovery, love and fear, pain and hope. And beyond that--the future.

Obi-Wan scratches Boga's blue-green crest , "It's pathetic isn't it to prefer prison to being General Kenobi, Councilor Kenobi, huh, old girl? I liked being karking someone else.", he swallowed the tears. The words would have to self-destruction just like his old heart. There is no room for questioning, longing, wishing for something that cannot be, not when there is duty and responsibility to the Republic, the Jedi, the Force itself.

The crown of purple-blue-jade feathers on the back of its head lifts as it considers him like an equal, like a challenger, and he straightens without thinking. A sort of harness wraps around its body along with a vest; it says on the side, SERVICE ANIMAL IN TRAINING, and DO NOT DISTRACT, black font on bright orange.
“Obi-Wan,” the lady tries to get his attention but he’s too busy having a staring contest with the animal that reminds him so closely, so terribly of some half-forgotten idea of home.
“I want you to meet Boga.”One by one, we each stay alive.
