“You’re the one that said I make you uncomfortable.” Luke looks like a shadow of his usual self, quiet and reserved. Like someone’s finally put a lid over the overflowing bubbles of joy that this man is made of. “So I’ll stay away. I’m sorry.”
With that he walks away, mingling with the crowd, and Calum can’t see him anymore. He’s not sure how to feel about what just happened, and he’s left staring blankly at the bobbing blonde head until it disappears from view completely. What if he somehow secretly enjoys Luke’s larger than life, somewhat overwhelming company? It can’t be, right? He doesn’t think so. At least, that’s what he’s hoping. But it doesn’t feel right to let him walk away like this. He doesn’t know why.
“Hey, Luke!” he calls, weaving through the crowds. “Wait up! Luke!”

“Something feels like it’s missing,” Ashton continues, voice slow, words coming out slowly, like he’s measuring them. Picking out what exactly to say so nothing comes out where it isn’t meant to. Something Luke could never master. “Like- It’s just not fun anymore.”
“What’s not fun anymore?” Luke asks, despite himself. It’s half two in the morning, he has a long day at work tomorrow, and his half-asleep brain can’t comprehend a single word that’s coming out of his boyfriend’s mouth. But he entertains him anyway, because he’s a little bit of a pushover that way. He never wants to hurt anyone’s feelings, especially Ashton’s.
Ashton just flails his arms about, gesturing at the space around them. “This,” he says. “This whole- thing, like, waking up every morning and- and doing the same things until we crawl back into the sheets each night- It’s not… I don’t know what to say. It’s just not fun anymore.”

His ex-boyfriend, ex-best friend Michael Clifford with the huge square-framed black glasses sliding down onto his round little nose, blonde fringe falling over his green eyes, and the dark bands tattooed on his forearms that Luke liked to trace as Michael glared at a textbook with smoldering intensity.
