There was another boy there at the base of the balcony outside of Meng Shi's window, where Meng Yao liked to sit: a boy few years older than him, taller, in finely made clothing that would normally make Meng Yao itch all over in futile envy, but the other boy’s eyes were white around the edges in a way that was immediately, painfully familiar.
“Someone’s chasing you?” Meng Yao asked, and the boy’s eyes widened even further, surprised, but he nodded in confirmation. “There’s a trellis around the left side – can you climb up? I'll hide you.”
"Thanks," the boy said, later, once the man he called Wen Ruohan had left. "My name is Nie Mingjue. What's yours?"

Meng Shi had seen this coming since A-Yao passed childhood into young adolescence and had taken much more from her than his cultivator father. His face was smooth, with bright eyes and a soft mouth. He had her small stature, her thick dark hair which knotted in the wind, her smile. His father was there in the shape of his face, his nose, his wide shoulders, but no one looking at him could deny, he was his mother's son.
"What did she promise you?" Meng Shi asked instead. Her son tensed, folding his head into her neck and sniffling.
"She said she had medicine. For your cough." A-Yao, her sweet boy, willing to trade something that, if Meng Shi had a say, would never be sold. Her son was going to be a rich cultivator under his father, regarded as the prodigy he was, and marry a beautiful woman who will see his unending intelligence and big heart. She would make it so.

During the Sunshot Campaign, the Two Lords had wed and consolidated their power and authority over their newly joined territory and then shown up to the battlefield astride dragons to win what should have been an unwinnable war. Lan Xichen, the Lord of Jade, was beautiful and possessed a brilliant tactical mind; Nie Mingjue, the Lord of Blades, fierce and formidable. They had collected warriors and rulers to their side in the aftermath, though without the fierce expansionist tendencies against which the war had been fought.
