Draconic souls never truly die, and the laughing ghost of the Guildmaster is more than happy to wreak merry chaos across the many planes. If one were to look deep into the glowing blue of the ley lines, they might catch a glimpse of the Herald and the Architect Arcane, who waltz hand in hand along the flicker and spark of the magical veins.
The world ends, and then restarts again. The souls of those who saved it rest easy.
For the most part.

Sean came up behind him then, and slipped his right hand into Marion’s back pocket.
Marion moved fast—faster than he thought he could anymore, since the night of the lighthouse when some of the fight went out of him. He turned counterclockwise and seized Sean, both hands grasping the hair at the back of his head, and stared him down a minute. Sean didn’t blink.
It would be good to hold each other. The evening’s work had been grueling, and the artifact they recovered could have done much worse to any of them than robbing Sean of his voice. Marion still had tension stored up, clearly.
And as for Sean, Marion could see, now that he was close, how badly he needed to be put to use.
He kissed Sean, rough on purpose. What would have been a grunt came out as a huff of air instead. Sean’s tongue pressed into Marion’s mouth—yes—and then he pulled away, gave Marion a warning look, and pointed at the ceiling. He was right. They shouldn’t keep Jean waiting.

Mr. Finnerty sat up abruptly, his left hand going to the atlas vertebra where Jean’s neck met her skull, his right smoothing over her hip and getting a feel of her buttock, but gently, so gently that she gasped. “Do you know,” he said, his voice husky and somehow wistful in her ear, “the only other person who gets to call me by my last name anymore is my LT, and I don’t see him in here with us.”
Jean breathed through her nose for composure. That would be… entirely too many men. “I would hate for you to receive conflicting orders,” she told him.
Mr. Finnerty’s laugh gusted her hair. “Say Sean.”
Jean shut her eyes and mouth tight.
