Her whole body shook as her brain struggled to make sense of what was happening. A few moments later, she recognized the Russian's expression. She'd seen it on the faces of other WAGs when their men went down hard. It was the physical manifestation of her recurring nightmare - Hayden motionless and bleeding after a hit, thinking she was about to lose the love of her life. Nothing else existed but that body lying on the ice.

As far as space pirate ships went, the Carte Blanche was deeply unsexy.
There was nothing particularly appealing about the shape of the exterior. It was largely ovular, the least sexy of shapes, and between the standard, unpainted metal panels of the hull and the dull eggshell white of the interior cabins, the Carte Blanche was fairly puritanical for a ship in its specific universe.
That was alright by the crew. Due to a clerical error, the entire crew of the Carte Blanche were betas.

He’s met humans whose motives defy explanation, people who use their lives as battering rams, as tools, as weapons, as chess pieces.
None of that stopped Louis in his tracks.
