Summary
“D’you want a second helping of that?”
Bert considers Marya openly as she scarfs down her stew like a woman starving. She looks different like this, softer. More open, or at the very least more obvious about how closed off she is. There’s grease scuffed across one cheek and something dark under her fingernails. Her spoon clatters loudly, her gulps echoing in the relative silence of the galley. She lowers her bowl from her mouth, eyes lifting to appraise him over its rim. She says nothing.

Summary
“Like hell I was gonna let you go without eating something. You can’t survive off caffeine alone, girl.” She squints at Adaine’s mug. “You want any milk or sugar for that?”
Adaine isn’t going to be drinking it, no matter how much she wants to. She opens her mouth to say as much. “Um, sure,” she finds herself saying instead.
Lydia rolls her way back to the kitchen. “Well, which one?” she asks, hand stretched halfway to the fridge.
“Both?” Adaine asks timidly, mouth betraying her again. Gods, at the least it would be nice if you could be wrong confidently, she thinks. What’s the matter with you?

Summary
On her own, Van never would’ve gone down to bloody Katur. She would’ve spent a pleasant evening with Bert in the hot tub, maybe helped him whip up a flight or two of aioli, and watched the nut pigs roll ‘round on deck. Even with Wealwell and Freyja onboard, she thinks it wouldn’t’ve been a half-bad way to spend a night. Instead, she’s here dropping things ‘cross the floor ‘cause she’s lost five fingers in one go.
She doesn’t recognise her reflection anymore. It’s like every time she sees herself, something is different—her eyes are darker, she’s rimmed in shadow, her blummin’ arm is gone. Something is happening to her, something far beyond her grasp. Everything Van’s known about herself, her family, her curse—all of it’s out the window now. The worst part is how good it feels.

Summary
Van watches Max strain against Marya’s grasp, his face turning red with effort, the tendons in his neck jumping out. “I will never. Don’t! Don’t! Don’t!” His pleas get increasingly frantic, sweat beading along his hairline, breath quickening. Van feels hers speed up along with it.
“Oh-kay, he really does refuse to submit,” Marya sing-songs, releasing him and standing up in one swift movement. Like it was never there, her manic grin vanishes, replaced by something much more approachable. Van feels the loss in her stomach. “I thought that might get him.”
The tonal whiplash is stunning. Van’s still reeling, images of Marya’s gloved hands in Gotch’s hair imprinted on the back of her eyelids every time she blinks. Her grip on Max’s ankles loosens just slightly, and he pulls them free.

Summary
“I can’t just leave my ship,” she protests, though it sounds weak to her own ears.
Comfrey leans forward again in one sudden movement, gaze sharpening. “Hasn’t the ocean taken enough from you already?” Her voice is close, intimate like she’s confiding something of grave importance. “You don’t owe it anything, you know. Don’t you want to experience true freedom?”
Van thinks of the deep, and then, newly, of the stars. Across the pub, her mum’s worried eyes rove over her face. She takes a deep breath in, then lets it out.
“Tell me more,” she says.
Van's life changes when she meets Comfrey. Years later, it changes again when she meets Marya.

Summary
“I suppose," Maxwell says slowly, voice soft and raw, "I've thought about what it would be like to - khm. To be made available, as it were."
Olethra makes a soft, inquisitive noise, her fingers once again scratching gently through his short hair. “Aren’t you available now?” she asks, and Maxwell shudders, even as he tries to stay still.
“Available,” he says again, stressing the word, “whenever someone wanted me.”

Summary
Marya finds Van staring over the edge of the Zephyr, her flesh hand white-knuckled around the railing. This far from the smokestacks of Eisengeist, the sky is clear, the whole of it dotted with the tiny white points of light of distant stars, but Van isn’t looking up. She’s looking down, deep into the icy black abyss of the ocean far below.

Summary
One year after Ted leaves Roy in charge as gaffer at AFC Richmond, Roy invites Keeley to a charity match that he's organized, for a mysterious chat he wants to have. He invites her and Jamie out to dinner after the match, and they have a little chat that turns into something a whole lot more.
~~~
Roy was waiting behind the wheel, grouchy as ever. Jamie opening the door for her didn’t shock her, but closing it and opening the one for the backseat, yeah, that did.When had Roy and Jamie become good enough friends for Jamie to be part of the special trip, taken off the bus and plunked into Roy’s backseat?
Keeley checked her makeup in the mirror, that same flustered confusion deep in her stomach. She’d known things had changed- anyone with two eyes could see the way Jamie listened to Roy at games now, and she’d known the four a.m. special training sessions had been regular and were on their way to permanent. She’d known, but Jamie tagging along in the backseat- that was new new. Nothing she’d ever thought would be a possibility, and it tightened her stomach that there they were, all of them, Roy and Keeley in the front, and Jamie there with them.
Summary
Maxwell has done this before - knows the feeling of hands on his waist, of strong thighs trapped between his own, the smell of sweat and traces of cologne and cigarettes smoke and men. He's never done it with someone made entirely of cool, smooth iron, though. Not with someone who he cared to see the next morning, with someone he cared so deeply about the opinions of.
