    Summary

The bell over the door chimed like it always did—soft, apologetic, a little old-fashioned for a shop surrounded by cafés with minimalist signage and espresso machines that hissed like offended cats.

Kaz looked up automatically from the ledger he was pretending to balance.

“Inej,” Kaz said, before he could stop himself.

She smiled when she saw him, bright and unguarded, the kind of smile that made the rest of the shop feel like a set dressing. “Kaz.”

From behind the counter, Jordie made a loud, theatrical sound of suffering. “You greet her like she’s a regular customer.”

“She is a regular customer,” Kaz shot back.

“She’s here more often than our suppliers,” Jordie said. “I’m just saying. If we charged rent—”

    “Hi, Jordie,” Inej interrupted pleasantly.

Jordie grinned. “My favorite sociology menace. What’s the damage today?”

The Rietveld brothers run a bookstore in the bustling city of Amsterdam. Inej is an overworked, harried university student that needs a quiet place to study, more than anything else.

    Summary

Wylan looks over at the revealed panel through blurry eyes.
He prays for a miracle, that finally, finally, his brain would comply, that he’d be able to prove his worth. Of course, all he sees is a jumbled mess of lines and shapes that don’t form any particular pattern. Of course. He’s still stupid.

Wylan desperately begs, his face a mess of tears and snot and sweat. Jesper’s guns remain tight, a threat. “Dad, stop, I- you know I can’t, I can’t do it-”

“See?” Jan says, smugly, as if he’s won any sort of battle. “The boy cannot read. Nineteen years old and unable to read.”

“So you won’t mind if my man here puts two bullets through his skull.”

    OR

Wylan never left his father's house. The crows take interest.

    Summary

    “You’ve been stalling,” Jesper realized.

Wylan flinched, chewing on his bottom lip. “I’ve been trying to recreate it,” he stubbornly repeated, his face smoothing over with remarkable practice, and it would have been a good lie.

It would have been, if Jesper hadn’t grown up around jurda fields and understood precisely how to take each blossom apart. If Jesper hadn’t been a curious boy once, splitting each stem to understand how each flower bloomed beneath his mother’s touch – before grief had turned question into longing, and longing into restlessness.

This wasn’t the plan: they were supposed to save Wylan, not kill him. But he’d seen what the parem had done, and the secret of it couldn’t leave this room.

    ------------------

Or, the AU where Wylan is responsible for jurda parem, Jan Van Eck hires Kaz to rescue him from the Ice Court, and Jesper takes aim at Wylan.

    Summary

“I need Aunties to stop asking me when I’m getting married, or looking at my pityingly if I come alone to weddings,” Inej stated, matter-of-fact. “I need someone to play my devoted, very committed boyfriend, so I don’t get thrown at someone’s nephew.”
Kaz hummed, crossing his arms across his chest as he leaned back in his chair. “What do I get out of it?”
    “What do you want?”
    ...
Or the one where Inej needs a fake date for her cousin's wedding to ward off all of the invasive, nosy questions from 'well-meaning' relations enquiring why at she's unmarried at 26 (read: an old crone). Enter her friend and roommate, Kaz Brekker. Too bad she has a devastatingly embarrassing crush on the man.

    Summary

Arthur could see his father glaring down - face red and eyes narrowed as he looked at Merlin with clear distaste.

"Once this over, sorcerer...I’ll burn you."

"You’ve already tried that," Merlin’s voice answered and Arthur had to bite his fist to keep from making any noise. “You need to accept you can’t kill me… Hand me that blanket, please.”

“I’m sure there must be some method… Beheading?”

    “No, we tried that.”

    “Hanging?”

“I just sort of... Swung there, remember?”

    There was another pause.

“I should have made you keep that dragon below the castle so I could feed you to it.”

“Kilgharrah? He won’t eat me, but if you want to torture me than making me listen to his nonsense for an hour might do it.” Merlin said and there was a soft sigh from the other end of the room. “I’m glad you agreed to help me though. Usually I have to do the grunt work of saving Arthur myself.”

“I can’t wait to kill you.”

    Or

Uther finds out about Merlin’s magic, but can’t seem to kill him. Merlin is just trying to protect Arthur. They become a begrudgingly effective duo. Arthur doesn't understand why they think he isn't noticing this.
