Rocky does not need the assistance of a machine for Grace’s language. It is ugly and harsh to listen to, but it’s relatively simple to learn. That, and, well—Rocky was alone for a very, very long time before he met Grace. He maybe hangs on to each word a little more than strictly necessary. “Would it help––should I bring my dinner in too?” Grace jokes, smiling in preparation for the absolute symphony of disgusted whistles he knows Rocky will produce at the thought of them doing something as depraved as sharing a meal. “I’ve been saving this week’s half packet of ramen for just such an occasion––”
A torrent of sound not unlike four harmonizing freight train whistles bursts from Rocky, the shifting plates of carapace at the top of what Grace thinks of as his “head-and-torso” rattling rapidly. Twin puffs of superheated air escape his vents, and there’s a ringing in Grace’s ears as he watches a glass beaker vibrate itself off the edge of the lab table near them and onto the floor with a loud clang. He squeezes his eyes shut, bracing for a shatter that never arrives, then stares in disbelief at the scene before him.
[YES YES YES!] Rocky’s translator app suddenly blares from the laptop on the floor between them. [YES ACCEPT ACCEPT ACCEPT! GRACE RAMEN ♪♫♪♫ WITH ROCKY, ACCEPT! GRACE ROCKY EAT ♪♫♪♫ MEAL TOGETHER AFFIRMATIVE YES YES AFFIRMATIVE NOW.]

After the Taumoeba leak, after I decided to die after all and turned my ship around to save Rocky, after Rocky's frantic calculations about food supplies, Taumoeba multiplication rates, and human caloric intake needs, after we realized that with some rationing and luck I would make it, but that we were headed toward the unknown territory of trying to rapid-prototype me a life support system and synthetic food supply on an inhospitable planet: after all of that, after everything, I shouldn't have been surprised that it only took a few months on board the Hail Mary for things to get weird.

Rocky stares at me, as much as a being with no eyes and 360 degrees of echolocation ability can stare. I am acutely aware that he can hear every beat of my heart, every hitched breath. He can probably sense the pinpricks of sweat that bead on my forehead. I swallow, my heart hammering in my chest at the silence.
Rocky finally tilts his carapace ever so slightly. “You are aroused by strength in mate, question?”

Grace isn’t as sick anymore. He doesn’t need Rocky at his side all the time. Grace will do what he has to do so that Rocky and Adrian can resume living a normal life together. So what if Grace struggles to be alone? This is for Rocky’s sake. He’ll be okay.
But Grace has severely underestimated how much he needs Rocky, and how much Rocky needs him.
