Summary
Derek's a drifter with no home, no destination, and no will to live. Stiles works on his family's failing cattle and horse ranch while all his friends are going off to college. When Derek falls asleep in a random barn, exhausted and half-starved, he doesn't expect to wake up on the other end of the sheriff's shotgun. Derek is about to leave, content with the smell of blood as proof that the Fury is dead when he hears it.
A heartbeat.
It’s faint and uneven and even with its help, it takes Derek a full minute of scanning the clearing before he finally spots the small heap that must be the human. It’s down on the far side of the canyon, almost completely hidden by a tall oak tree and–Derek jumps down before he thinks about it.
He knows what he has to do. Furies are dangerous. Furies are fire and smoke and a funeral he barely remembers. He lands almost silently and makes sure his hands are fully shifted into claws and then slowly moves forward.

Summary
The boy was dirty. Very dirty. Most likely from the trap he’d been found in, the leg snare Derek figured, even though Peter hadn’t mentioned what type of trap it was. Mud dried and flaked off in patches on his left forearm, caked into the front of his sleeveless rough-hewn tunic and threadbare pants, up from his bare feet all the way to his knees, a dark streak painting the right side of his neck and continuing up into his clumsily cut brown hair - clearly he’d done it himself with a knife and perhaps no reflective surface, though judging by his appearance, a pond or puddle could have done just fine for him. Derek realized a lot of the spots he assumed to be mud were actually moles that dotted all along the boy’s skin.
Derek watched as the boy studied him back in silence, sitting with his arms wrapped tightly around himself. He stared hard at the crescent-shaped insignia picked out in silver and green sewn onto the dark gray fabric over Derek’s heart, a slight frown wrinkling his brow. The boy had to know about the Hales if he was part of the Argent pack.
“What’s your name?”
“St… Stiles.”

The child emissaries usually never live past their fifth year with the wolves. The boy sitting on the tree stump can't be more than eight summers old, maybe less, and he has big, dull eyes that land on Derek first when they break the clearing. He doesn't even flinch; Derek does.

By the time Stiles witnesses the cage fighter known as Wolverine take out a shotgun and its wielder with his bare hands, he's got a plan. He knows there's a school in New York for kids like him. All he has to do is get there.
OR, in which Derek is the werewolf version of Wolverine and Stiles is Rogue and the plot of X-Men progresses accordingly, with a few notable deviations.

Maybe it’s the fact that he is asked, and many people have asked Stiles for things, but none of them have actually wanted anything from him besides his father.
People want pencils, they want paper, or his notes, or for him to behave, to be quiet.
His father wants him to be patient, to be kind, to be loyal, and to love him despite; his father wants Stiles in that way no one really understands until they have children and only children.
His father wants him in the desperate way.
Peter wants him in those ways too, except not.
Peter wants all these things to apply to him, he wants Stiles to give himself to him, wants him in a visceral way, and in the way lovers do.
He see’s something in Stiles and no one has seen something in Stiles since his mother.
So he says yes.

Stiles swallowed at the thinly veiled threat, and tried to think. So, apart from the heavy molesting that was currently going on...
“I've seen your face,” Stiles grit out.

Peter never bit Scott, but Stiles still managed to get too involved with the murder cases. If only he weren't so smart.

“Stu–” Stiles says softly as his brother crowds him slightly, Stuart's other hand reaching up to stroke his thumb lightly along Stiles' cheekbone, and despite the welling in his chest, like he suddenly wants to cry, Stiles leans into it. He resigns. He concedes.
Because he does want to be happy. Wasn't that the point of all this?
