Summary
What I wanted to write was a quick one-shot that explored the idea of Harry being the biological son of Voldemort, only Voldemort doesn't know he has a son and is also as evil as ever. Meanwhile, Harry is just a charismatic kid with a snake and ridiculously powerful magic.
It turned into a series rewrite.

Summary
When Petunia Dursley refused to take Harry in she forfeited his birthright protection, so Dumbledore took the baby to the safest place he knew: Hogwarts.
The applicable staff (mostly just… not Snape) took Harry in on a rotating schedule as he grew from baby to toddler to child. They traded extra credit for babysitting among the older students, and Harry grew up knowing a few dozen different laps that were safe and warm to nap in.
This was a Harry who grew up among books, among old transient walls and learned professors. They gave Binns night duty sometimes, and let him talk young Harry to sleep. This was a Harry whose world changed, on principle, daily. The stairs moved. The walls became doors. You had to keep your eyes open–you had to pay attention. So he did.
He grew up in a school. Knowledge was power, but knowledge was also joy. This was his sanctuary. There was magic in his world from birth.

Summary
Voldemort hunts down a traitor to punish him and dispose of him before he can do any more damage to his cause. His mark leads him to the rat in Godric's Hollow. He is furious, he explicitly told all his followers to ignore the prophecy one of them eavesdropped. They had time, after all. He had time to observe and choose the right adversary.
He almost Apparates on a nearly frozen child.
A nearly frozen child that shows magic.Or, Voldemort is forced to adopt Harry and becomes an overprotective parent.

Summary
The thing Gandalf neglected to mention when he assured Thorin Oakenshield and Company that Bilbo Baggins of Bag End would be the perfect thief for their mission was this:
A Hobbit wouldn't be able to tell a diamond from a pearl, or from an Arkenstone - no matter how hard they try.
This leads to some confusion, on Bilbos part. And some frustration, again on Bilbos part.
(What sort of a description was 'heart of the mountain', anyway? A useless one, that's what.)
