Flins rereads these words in Varka's near-incomprehensible scribble. He hears them in Varka's voice. He sees Varka's smile. Feeling his mouth curl upwards in spite of himself, Flins wonders when Varka will tire of asking questions to which he already knows the answers.
After a run-in with Flins at the lighthouse, Varka suggests they write letters to each other to stay in touch. Their friendship grows into something much larger than either of them had initially imagined.

Deities feel the pain of their past mistakes dogging every footstep, but unlike the mortal man who eventually gets to set down his shadow and walk into that space beyond life which we can only guess at, a god simply has to keep trudging on as the weight on their shoulders grows ever-heavier.
Beware the Breeze and Earth. Beware the surviving Victors. They walk amongst mortals. Neither of them will ever be one.

Wriothesley looks up from his thermos. “These things?”
“Food. Rest. Company. The needs of the body. Of the heart.” A pause. “Desire.”
Wriothesley’s expression stills.
Not startled. Not mocking.
Just open.
“And now?” he asks, after a breath.
Neuvillette folds his hands in his lap. His nails are too neatly trimmed. His sleeves immaculate. His posture immaculate. He does not know how to be not immaculate.
“I am learning,” he says softly, “that to be above something is not the same as to be free from it.”
Or, Neuvillette forgets to eat, and Wriothesley remembers for him.
