Mike’s brows are always slightly furrowed around a question he never voices.
Will doesn’t ask him to say it out loud. He’s afraid Mike’s mouth might settle into the same agonizing syllables it seems so used to. “Best friends?”
Will’s answer would remain the same. “Best friends.”
It would be a lie.
or: Will is angry; Mike is sorry. There’s not enough words for either emotion, and they need to learn to speak the same language once again.

"Mike," Will began, raising his eyebrows. "What's going on with you?" Mike shrugged in response, pushing around the green peas on his tray with a plastic fork.
"Nothing," He finally responded, clearing his throat. "I'm fine."
"Bullshit," Will countered immediately, leaning in. Dustin and Lucas sat beside them, quietly watching and choosing to let Will handle this argument. Mike finally let his eyes fall on Will, who was equally as daring to stare back.
Mike Wheeler has been in love with Will Byers for as long as he could remember. He suppresses his obsession with his best friend, hoping it was all just in his head. Soon he ends up finding his hunger taking over, and he no longer can keep his secrets.

He leans all the way over Will's back, his hot breath ghosting over the wet entrance before his tongue finds it.
"Why you've been bringing me all this food," Mike murmurs, his chest pressing down flush against Will's trembling spine. "Walking around in all those little fucking shorts. Giving me fuck-me eyes every time I open my door. Just so I lose my shit and bend you over exactly like this?"
Or: Will and Mike have been trading baked goods between apartments for months, but they've never been anything more than polite neighbors who happen to go to the same college.

Will smiled, pleased at that. “I do know,” he said loftily, and Mike got the sense he really did, and frequently used it against him to get his way. “But I like it when you tell me.”
Mike wakes ten years in the future, a successful novelist and in a committed relationship with Will.

“I guess?” Mike can imagine Will looking off to the side, scratching his cheek self-consciously.
He places his hands on Will’s shoulders, turning the other to look at him. He definitely looks stupid – his eyes closed while simultaneously trying to stare at Will intently.
“So you’ve been following me around this whole year?”
“Um. Yes?”
He groans, pressing the heels of his palms to his eyes. “Holy shit.”
“Holy shit.” Will echoes.

Mike must’ve understood it at the same time, because his hand fell away, quick, like he’d been burned.
