He cuts her off, “I know, Max.” he says softly. She feels relieved. “Listen,” he says gently, “If you’re ever feeling up to doing something like this again, you let me know. I’ll always be around, okay? Always.”
All of Steve's attempts at getting Max to come back from whatever metaphorical pit she had fallen in become worth it when she finally agrees to get some dinner with him and lets him into her world just enough so they can both pretend like everything is okay.

Summary
Claudia makes up a bed for Steve on the living room couch. She’s kind—fussing over him, making sure he has enough pillows and blankets, insisting that he stay here as long as he wants. Steve watches her double-lock the front door and check on Dustin at least five times before she goes to bed. Steve doubts she’ll really sleep.
Steve’s grateful, and it’s comfortable, but he’s not going to sleep, either. Not while Dustin is alone in the other room.
He hopes Dustin doesn’t have any nightmares. He hopes his face doesn’t hurt too much, and that he doesn’t wake up with a splitting migraine. He hopes he isn’t crying himself to sleep. He knows he probably is.

Robin stumbles, suddenly, almost bringing the two of them down. He’s just about able to grab for a nearby tree to avoid them both crashing into a pile, awkwardly keeping her upright.
“Jesus, Robin!” Steve starts, only to realise how ragged her breathing sounds. Alarm bells ring in his head. “Robin?”
She shakes her head, her eyes squeezed shut. “S’just—One moment—”
She sags to the ground before he can do anything.
Stuck in the woods, all Steve and Robin can do is wait for rescue... and hope it comes in time.

Although Dustin heard Steve stop walking, he didn’t notice anything was off until he spoke.
“Uh… Dustin?” Dustin turned. Steve was standing stock still, looking oddly pale in the steely darkness. “Something’s…” He stuck his hand under his shirt almost mechanically. It came away dark red. “...wrong.”
Then Steve, with his eyes glassy and faraway, was lifting up the hem of his shirt to reveal a lacy network of puncture wounds.

Steve is dying, and his blood is dripping onto Dustin’s arms, and Dustin doesn’t even know where it’s coming from.
“You can’t,” Dustin mutters frantically, pressing at Steve’s head and arms and chest, trying to cover up a wound he can’t find. “You can’t. You have to be okay, Steve, you’re okay.”
Steve smiles, and there’s blood on his teeth, and Dustin can’t do this, he can’t do this, not again.
