Summary
Harukawa Maki is unused to special attention. Her entire life, she's been a part of a herd—just another cog, another solider headed to slaughter. To her total frustration, this flips on its head and she quickly becomes the object of one Chikako Atsuko's affection. She hates it. She insists on hating the attention, in fact. She does everything she knows how to do to get her to stop—every scare tactic, every threat. It doesn't take. And, slowly, she finds herself liking the attention she swears to hate.
But then Momota dies, and Chikako spills the alibi keeping her from pinning Ouma as the killer, and all the affection is gone—drained like blood from the carotid. Instantaneous.
So, when she notices the sickly pallor of her skin that morning, while her mind runs a mile a minute—betraying her in its concern, she doesn't do a double take. Instead, she storms out of the cafeteria and doesn't look back.
How she wishes she would've looked back.

She tries to imagine the two other girls somewhere out there. She wonders if they live in a small village like her, or if they live in a city, or by the water. She wonders what the other girls will be like. She wonders if they’ll like her.
“I can’t wait to meet them,” Rumi says reverently.

Summary
She fumbles in her pocket for her phone and scrambles to get it unlocked. The screen is cracked in three different places and the plain black phone case was cheap and chipping much like the thin coat of red polish brutishly smeared over her nails like she’d stuck them into a living corpse and ripped and tore. At least that’s how she sees it.
If she’s living then everyone else must be living dead.
Maybe then she won’t feel as bad.
