Summary
Tolys is used to keeping his head low to survive Ivan's affections and holding everyone who cares about him at arm’s length for the sake of his pride. Gilbert is assigned to him as an eternal character witness for their evolving soviet future, and he soon discovers how easily Ivan’s newest possession can chew right through those defenses.
As they grow closer, the two of them seem to be deteriorating with no simple answers to why or what it can mean, and that shining red star of optimism grows only dimmer and further away.

“Someone’s up late,” Crosshair drawls, spinning his chair around and preparing to scold their littlest member for not being in bed, but stops short when he faces her. Omega has Lula tucked under one arm, shuffling a little where she’s standing. Her eyes are big and red-rimmed, and she quickly swipes at the remnant of tears on her cheeks when Crosshair leans forward to look at her in the dim light.
“Nightmare?” He asks quietly. She nods. He sighs, crossing his arms. “Why don’t you go bother Hunter or Wrecker?”
Omega fidgets, worrying on one of Lula’s ears. “I, um. I didn’t want to wake them.”
Crosshair frowns. Omega has no qualms with climbing into one of her brothers’ bunks after a nightmare; after her ordeal with the bounty hunters on Bora Vio, she’s spent more nights than not curled into Hunter, her little hands clutching his shirt as she sleeps. But she’s not in the bunk room, which means that she sought out Crosshair on purpose. She’s here, in the cockpit, to be with him.

Hunter took in and released a breath. “The lawyer’s name is Obi-Wan Kenobi.” He passed Tech the business card. “He’s an old friend of Cody’s. He said he’d help us…” Another breath, in and out. “I called CPS and reported the abuse. He thinks… he said that he’s confident that we could get custody of Omega.”
The silence that followed his declaration was hollow, each man around the table taking a moment to let it sink in. Wrecker slumped backwards, good eye glazed with relief. Tech nodded, his tablet propped in front of him, legal documents and forums pinned and filed. Echo, catching Hunter’s eye, gave him an approving nod.
Crosshair laughed. “Right,” he scoffed, turning to rinse out his coffee cup. “Perfect.” He dried his hands on the kitchen towel, balled it up, and slammed it into the sink. “Great call, Hunter.”
For over ten years, Hunter and his brothers thought they were done with their mother, Nala Se, her abuse far behind them. When they learned that they have a little sister, still in their mother's care, they decided to do something about it.

Tarka blinked at Oros. Then he blinked again. And, after blinking for a third time to make sure he hadn’t missed anything, he laughed. “Oros, you just described every Risian dating back to at least the 18th century.”
Oros’ eyes widened. Not much, but just enough that Tarka was able to notice from the limited space between them. “Your people are big on physical affection?”
“Something like that.” A beat, and then, “Our reputation precedes us.”
“It must not have made it to my corner of the galaxy,” Oros said, before going in for a second session with the osteogenic stimulator.
