“Uh,” you say dumbly and the sensation narrows, constrained to a point in the distance, approaching. You stare so hard that your eyeballs nearly begin to burn with how wide you hold them, holding your breath. You’re not sure how you even muster the strength to move your legs, scramble behind the piece of concrete for what you know, even though you don’t know why you know, is flimsy protection.

Logic would dictate that you're having some sort of psychotic breakdown because logic would dictate that finding another living human being in the middle of all this would probably be a good thing.

“D’ya,” you start, unsure if you even wanna get into this because the furthest you ever got with a philosophical conversation was when you asked him if he thought cereal was a soup and he answered food was food. So at least you know he doesn’t care for labels. You turn to lie on your side. You probably have a double-chin this way. “Do you ever think ‘bout what you’ll do? After all this is over?”
“After this?” He asks, cocking his head. But you get the feeling he knows what you’re talking about. He’s picked up on your discomfort. Gonna work off it.
“Like,” you fumble for words and gesture to the room, the motel, the long stretch of road that waits for you in the morning. The lack of permanence to it all. Do you count in that equation too? “This. Y’know. The travellin’ and the motels and…ya ever thought about settlin’ down or somethin’?”
He grunts. “Why? You been thinkin’ ‘bout it?”
“Sometimes,” you mumble, almost as though you’re ashamed of wanting more than this, more than what he’s willing to give you.

Despite it being the most ostentatious thing anyone has ever said to you, it's full of mockery, too—an infantilising barb drenched in ownership, possession. As if you're a trinket to be kept; a child in need of supervision. A firmer hand, perhaps.
(and those gruff words cause two problems for you: the first is that you're not sure if he means it in a parental way—an innocuous sentiment from an overbearing, but well-intentioned, father angry on your behalf—or a bald, albeit gruff, pickup line from a man with stress lines older than you.
the second is that you're not entirely sure which one you want it to be more.)
