Summary
Jiang Cheng arrives to teach his class as a guest lecturer for the summer sessions in Cloud Recesses. Unfortunately, he immediately discovers that he's been assigned to substitute for his brother's class: Intro to Dual Cultivation.
The thing is Jiang Cheng isn’t exactly a blushing virgin, but the whole point of the class is that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are cultivation partners, whereas Jiang Cheng is famously single. To add insult to injury, he also gets assigned an air-headed teaching assistant, Lan Jingyi.

Two vastly different pitches, distinguished by years of trial, victory, and experience in between, but bearing the same determination to pave his way to the ace number.
And, well, there he is now, all the way in Cooperstown, his name forever remembered alongside the greatest to ever play baseball.

‘He died for you.’ Chuuya stated simply.
‘I see.’ Oda answered. ‘I suppose you wanted to know what kind of person I am, to determine whether that sacrifice was worth it or not.’
‘Something like that.’
The man sighed. ‘In that case, I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you once again.’ he said. ‘I’m just a detective, and not even a good one at that. I suppose the fact I write also makes me a writer by default, though that’s even less noteworthy than me being a detective.’
Chuuya blinked in shock, and Oda gave him an apologetic look.
‘Not quite what you were hoping for?’
Worse, Chuuya thought to himself.
‘Is there anything you are good at?’ he asked, trying not to sound so desperate. Surely, there must have been a reason for Dazai wanting to save this man? A reason why he’d give his life in exchange for that of someone so insignificant?
‘I suppose I make a decent plate of curry, every once in a while.’

Summary
“You never did tell me why you’re doing all this.” Chuuya decides to change the topic. “You look like you’re having a shit time. Why force yourself?”
Dazai hums, resting his head on his knees. “Currently, I’m not allowed to die. So I suppose I’m trying to earn my right to live.”
A scoff, unamused but not derisive either. “The hell is that? You’re here right now, aren’t you?” When he receives no response, he sighs. “You know, I don’t get you at all. You toy with friends and foe alike, always lording over everyone, but it’s not like you’ve ever looked at anything. It’s like you’re far off in your own world. I can’t tell what’s going on in your head half the time.”
“Maybe if your brain weren’t being consumed by your hat, you would,” Dazai replies automatically, earning an indignant shout from Chuuya.
For Dazai, living might be far more terrifying than dying, but there are people who will catch him when he falls.
(A BEAST ending rewrite in which Atsushi makes it in time, Dazai says the right things for once, and things aren’t as broken as they seemed.)

There was a tinge of bitterness in his tone, despite how expertly the man tried to cover it up. It was a sound Atsushi was familiar with, a feeling he could pick out effortlessly. Ignoring the way his chest constricted, Atsushi sent the man a small smile, gripping the rim of his moving cart and pushing it towards the door.

Summary
(It didn’t surprise Dazai that Atsushi was willing to--that Atsushi wanted to, sometimes--manhandle him a little. It surprised him that Atsushi had found out his own spine was actually made of steel as quickly as he did, by pushing him up against the elevator wall after a nasty brush-up with a murderer at the end of a case. That Atsushi took unfailing care to not cause actual damage even as he wrapped his hands around Dazai’s wrists and held him down was so unsurprising it was almost boring, except it was difficult to find any part of Atsushi boring.)
