“School go okay?” Tony asked with a huff. It lacked that lick of genuine curiosity.
Peter played with his hands and watched as the man kept his gaze low—too low. Like he wished Peter wasn’t even there. “Uh, yeah,” he replied, shrugging and fiddling for words on the tip of his tongue. “Wasn’t all that interesting. We had a fire drill but it wasn’t actually a drill because someone in the woodshop set their project on fire. It got me out of a quiz though. That was fun.”
Tony hummed. And that hum was all that Peter was going to get. Disinterest and agitation were painted within the hard edges in Tony’s jaw and brow lines. If it hadn’t been a good day for Peter, then it definitely hadn’t been for Tony either.

Peter is probably having the worst day ever. First, he gets into an argument with Tony, punches a random guy in a pizza shop, and then he’s forced to watch his mentor get carted away on a stretcher. It's one big terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

"But he’s smart!" May had blurted, looking up at the teacher with misplaced anger. "I don’t...how does this make sense?"
She was worried, unaware, unprepared, not like Peter who had known for a while that some things were trickier for him than other kids. All the rules hidden in cheerful little rhymes and singing songs about which letters get along and those who don’t play nice; all the robotic reciting of the alphabet nearly every day: none of it had ever truly helped Peter understand how it all worked.
A brand new door opened in his life that day. On the front of it, the word ‘DYSLEXIC’ was printed in bold, the certainty of what it meant holding the letters permanently in place.

“You’re sick.” She mustered up something like bravery, using it to straighten her back and plaster a very grown-up look on her face. “I’ll get Daddy!”
“No!” Morgan jumped, eyes wide. Peter fought to calm his voice. He offered her a smile that couldn’t have been convincing, not even to a five year old. “No, you don’t have to. I feel better now. You don’t have to tell him.”
Morgan’s lips wobbled. Peter knew what her fake pout looked like well enough to know this wasn’t it. “Petey…”
Peter had a lot of reasons to feel guilty. He felt guilty for scaring her. He felt guilty for forgetting to lock his bedroom door, for making scaring her a possibility. He kind of, in a way, felt guilty for doing it in the first place, though not nearly enough to stop.
But more than anything, he felt guilty for this: “Morgan, promise me you won’t tell him. He…he won’t let us swim anymore if you do. And I’m not sick, my tummy just hurt a little bit, but I’m all better now. Promise me you won’t tell him, okay?”
“But…”
“Morgan. Promise.”

Harry meets Peter at four and a half (four and three-quarters, Harry insists, because adults always tell him he’ll understand things when he’s older, but he’s old enough for it to be annoying). Harry’s playing in the sandbox at Oscorp’s daycare (kinetic sand, actually, because what’s the point in being a cutting-edge, fortune 500 company if you don’t have the newest stuff) and Gregory Haskins stomps on his sand castle. Harry’s eyes fill with tears of frustration as Gregory laughs and steals the Tonka truck out of the sand, but before he gets the chance to wail, Peter is there.
Peter has a mop of soft, chestnut curls, and kind, brown eyes. He has dimples in his cheeks when he smiles, ever so gently, like Harry is a baby deer he’s afraid of spooking, and Harry blinks at him, surprised.

Peter leans against the wall while Tony chooses their floor, and the doors close. “Do you, uh, want me to do some interning stuff? Like go and get you coffee? Make sure the, uh—programs are all ready? Make sure the paintings are straight in the ballroom? Make sure the chairs are—”
Tony snorts. “Kid, I just thought you’d enjoy this. May told me about when it came through Queens but you two couldn’t make it because she was working and didn’t want you to go alone, and I thought, after all the shit you’ve been through lately, that you deserved something fun. No interning for you. That’s just an excuse.”
Peter remembers that. It was six months after Ben died, and he wasn’t gonna bother May too much about the conference. He didn’t know how much tickets cost anyways, or if kids his age could even go.
He really hung onto the idea of Iron Man after Ben died. Peter held him closer than ever.

“What are you doing?” Pepper asks, letting the door close behind her. “Are you doing experiments on Peter? Don’t do experiments on Peter.”
The room goes much quieter, and she hears Tony scoff, and Peter laughs in response. He slips a little lower in the contraption and Tony catches him so he doesn’t fall out.
“I am not doing experiments on my son,” Tony says. “Pepper. Virginia Potts. C’mon.”
“Then what are you doing?” Pepper asks, her hands on her hips. “Why is he in there? What are you trying to do? Is this some kind of symbiotic thing?”
Both Tony and Peter laugh at the same time, and it’s like the same sound but in different octaves. It nearly knocks her back.
“Obie made a point of saying I—am holding the kid so much that I barely get anything done, and he’s right, but Peter doesn’t like sitting in any of the chairs or being in his playpen if I’m within eyesight, and if I’m not within eyesight he starts freaking out, and I’ve gotta be within eyesight or I can’t see him and God knows what he’d get up to, huh?” Tony looks down at him then, bouncing him up and down.

“You’re an emotional drunk,” Rhodey says. Rhodey has his arms straight in the air and he’s staring at his hands like they’re deeply puzzling to him.
“Nuh uh,” Tony says, wiping the tears from his cheeks. “You just. You don’t get it.”
“I do get it,” Rhodey says. “I speak Tony language, and Tony language says that you… um, you love the kid. That’s what.”
“I do not!” Tony yelps. “I hate him! A scourge on my life and soul! I cannot stand his squeaky shoes and his stupid big ears!” Tony takes a deep breath and then delicately screams. “Who let him have such big ears, he’s going to fall over when it’s windy there are sailboats with sails smaller than his ears.”
Rhodey lets his arms flop down onto his chest and turns his head on the floor. Tony can hear the bumps in his skull rolling on the linoleum. “Man,” he says. “You love that kid so much it’s disgusting.”
