And he did. Stain was skilled and he had many blades, both literal and metaphorical. It would be near impossible for a hero of Nagisa’s skill level to beat him, steel to steel.
But Nagisa didn’t need to beat him. Because he didn’t need to be a hero, not to do this.
“Voila,” Koro-sensei said. “A trivial adversary indeed.
“Now, use that trusty blade to fillet him.”

The only problem was that the club was run by Hanguang-Jun, rumored to be the top enforcer of the Lan crime family, and it was nearly impossible to get in. The only people who were guaranteed admittance were VIPs (which Wei Wuxian was definitely not), or whichever omega Hanguang-Jun happened to be fucking that month. Wei Wuxian fit his general type, and decided to pose as the newest flavor on a night when the crime lord would be out of town and unable to verify his identity or not.Unfortunately, their intel was wrong. Hanguang-Jun was not out of town.

Summary
While studying at Cloud Recesses, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng plan a special surprise for Nie Huaisang's birthday. However, due to a miscalculation and Lan Wangji's unplanned appearance, a misfunctioning transportation talisman strands them thousands of li away from their original destination. Now, between four (three, because Nie Huaisang would very much like to remove himself from this list) talented cultivators, this is no reason to panic. With a bit of raft building, bird watching, and theoretical discussions, they eventually make their way home.
Or: Nie Huaisang doesn't expect anything to happen on his birthday. But he's wrong about this, the same way he always picks the wrong answer on Lan Qiren's quizzes.

Summary
Wei Wuxian gets caught sneaking into Cloud Recesses.
But since he can't tell the truth - that he's just here to deliver his teacher's most recent love letter to her soulmate who's stuck in a cave - he tells a lie instead. He says that he's a Jiang disciple that had arrived late and so had snuck in through the gates. He hadn't expected the lie to work, sure that it would unravel as soon as they found a Jiang to verify it, but instead Jiang Yanli backs up his story, and even adds to it.
Which is how he ends up masquerading as the first disciple of Lotus Pier while trying to figure out how to get out of Cloud Recesses without anyone discovering that he's the disciple of Baoshan Sanren.
