And not just normal cold like the rest of the world seems to think of it. It’s a type of cold that burrows its way inside your bones and lingers. It’s even worse if you’re a turtle that lives in the sewers and though Leo had never been shy about complaining about the cold his brothers never seemed to take him seriously.

Leo kept calling his name. With the immediate threat gone, Donatello swapped his staff to his right hand and extended the weapon out to his twin who grabbed the other end.
He remembered Raph pulling them toward the portal.
Then a ferocious roar. Bright red against grey. A clawed hand reaching toward his arm.
Then—
Then the next thing he knew he was staring at the med bay ceiling.
AKA Alternate film ending where rather than shooting a drill at the Kraang, Donnie jumps into the portal to stop him, and absolutely does not get out unscathed.

Donnie sits back in his chair, ignoring the twinge in his lower back the way he’s ignored it for the past three hours, and says, “What does the hard way look like?”
“You’re gonna hate it.”
“Color me intrigued.”
Leo shrugs and starts to lift himself up. The infirmary bed is raised at an angle, to help Leo breathe and reduce the risk of pneumonia that has kept Don awake at night, but now he’s pushing himself upright all the way, kicking at his blanket with the foot that isn’t casted.
“Oh my god, stop, I hate it,” Donnie blurts, all but flinging his tablet aside in his rush to put an end to this nightmare. “You win, you monster!”

Mikey’s looking at him. His eyes are searching, scanning him up and down, like a watchdog. Donnie’s in the middle of getting to his feet to work, and he can’t possibly open up to him. It’s stupid. Irrational. Deplorable.
Donnie offers back a pathetic grin. “I’m fine.” The words are quick, seamless. Mikey smiles something bright at him, the answer giving no one anything to think about, nothing to consider. Mikey is busy, busy like Donnie is, and he can’t bring himself to throw another thing onto the youngest brother.
He feels his shell pounding. Flesh ticking like clockwork. There’s no pain, not yet, just brass bright growing stains in his flawless techwear. No one notices.
Good. He’s got a lot of work to do.
