As Miss Mackenzie shows the group of small children around the room, the blonde girl clears her throat, taps Santana on the shoulder, and says, “Let’s be friends.”
Santana frowns with confusion. In the lead-up to today, her mother has mentioned the possibility of ‘making friends’ as a selling point of coming to preschool, as opposed to staying home, but Santana doesn’t quite know what Maribel means by that. “Do I have to do anything?”
The blonde girl laughs and shakes her head. “My name’s Quinn. What’s yours?”

It wasn’t uncommon for passers by to hear Sue Sylvester, award winning cheerleading coach who may or may not have been on horse tranquilisers, and who may or may not have once posed for Penthouse, yelling at her squad early on a Monday morning in dreary Lima, Ohio. The McKinley High Cheerios trained harder and longer than all of the sports teams they cheered for combined, and the proof was in the countless trophies, awards, accolades and scholarships they racked up year after year.
At William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, nothing really changes. Everyone knows everyone. People are born in Lima, and very few leave. No one rocks the boat, and the status quo is as it always was.
But in 2009, when the choir teacher resigns in disgrace, Spanish teacher Will Schuester takes over the school's glee club, rebranding it in the hopes of attracting talented performers from across the school.
The news completely rocks the school, but for Finn, Quinn, Santana, Brittany and Puck, it's the start of a completely life-changing experience...

Summary
West Lima Middle School was known for three things: terrible cafeteria food, a mysterious graffiti artist in the toilet block who was yet to be discovered, and an award-winning jazz band program that had been in existence since 1979. It wasn’t open to everyone; just a select group of seventh graders deemed trustworthy and conscientious enough to be part of a music ensemble and represent the school in public. The rest of the grade did gardening and cooking, which mostly involved their teachers trying to keep everyone in one piece for an hour, or, more accurately, trying to make sure Tyrone Spencer didn’t crack anyone else’s skull open.
Brittany, Santana, Quinn, Mike and Matt are among the few chosen to be a part of Ms Kowalczyk's seventh grade band class, and it's almost time for the Western Ohio Winter Band Showcase.
If only the kids could remember their sheet music...

When he got to work on the second Friday morning of the year only to find out that someone had broken his mental ‘honeymoon period until Thanksgiving and/or Christmas’ rule, his heart sank. Had it been some new, inexperienced teacher, someone who didn’t yet know not to drink out of someone else’s mug, or not to schedule school assignments to be due just before a vacation break? Had he pissed off Principal Figgins in a past life? He wondered who had done it, and he felt irrational anger towards the unknown person who’d snatched his Friday afternoon away from him like Sophie’s daughter.
It's a new school year, and Will wants to use his Friday afternoons to wind down with his colleagues, but he's been lumbered with the dreaded Friday afternoon detention supervision. Hopes of a 'honeymoon period until Thanksgiving' are dashed when, thanks to a mysterious fight at the lockers, Will winds up having to spend an awkward ninety minutes with his gold standard for moody teenage girls.
It shapes up to be one of the weirdest experiences he's every had at school...

Meanwhile, Sam's family goes through a tumultuous time, and Santana comes to realise her feelings for her best friend Brittany and is forced to face ghosts from her past. They both know their relationship isn't built to last, but when the going gets tough, they come to realise they need each other's friendship more than they care to admit. "At that moment, if Santana had any semblance of rationality in her mind telling her that maybe reading the messages wasn’t such a good idea, especially so early in the morning when the day hadn’t even had a chance to get any worse, that part wasn’t doing its job. And if it was, then it wasn’t loud enough. A curious, nagging voice that inexplicably found comfort in reading the hateful, threatening messages occupied her mind. It had always been there, but usually she could tune it out, like her math teacher, or Mr Schuester giving a pep talk. If she listened to it hard enough, it sounded almost like some weird hybrid of her abuela and Sue. It felt almost human.
