The temple had clearly been abandoned a while ago; aged and weathered, even its establishment plaque had fallen off at some point. There was absolutely nothing special about it.
And yet, looking at it, something in Xie Lian’s chest grew tight. That something compelled him to walk closer, closer, closer, climbing the steps to the temple proper even as his feet grew increasingly leaden. One of the temple doors was askew, and the other groaned weakly as he pushed it open.
Inside was nothing. Not a person, not a statue, not an offering. Just an altar, empty and alone.
And looking at that altar, something suddenly occurred to Xie Lian.
Oh. It’s been a year.

His heart beat in double-time and his stomach flipped, although he couldn’t explain why. He was just suddenly deeply anxious, certain the idyllic picture before him was about to crack like a mirror.

Hua Cheng's arms wrapped tightly around him, pressing him to his chest as if he feared that if he let go, he would lose him again. In that moment, nothing else mattered, but the one in his arms.

He simply holds the flared ends, running his thumb over the clumped strings and threading them through his knuckles as he thinks. Xie Lian waits patiently, even through this sudden tension in the air and against the swirling in his gut.

How does a slave from the stables end up being shipped off to a neighboring country as a gift to warm the bed of the crown prince? Well, Hua Cheng wasn't actually in the room at the time but, judging by everything he's put together and what Yin Yu has told him, it goes something like this.
1 The King of Yong’an wants to conquer Xianle.
2 The King doesn't want Xianle to know that yet so that he can take them by surprise.
3 To bring this about the King wants a spy deep enough in Xianle’s royal court that they can learn the royal family’s most intimate and military secrets, and who could be better positioned to do that than a concubine?
So 4 the King of Yong’an tells his inner counsel that the first step in his invasion plan is to give the crown prince a concubine.
Or Hua Cheng is given to the crown prince of Xianle as a concubine with the job of seducing him in order to spy on him for the neighboring kingdom of Yong'an, but when real feelings get involved things get ...complicated
