Carol had thought that she was done experiencing fresh horrors. What a nightmare it is to realize that she is not. “Oh, god.” She says.

After they manage to break Zosia free of the hive, Zosia and Carol try to navigate the field of landmines that is their relationship.

But as with all things, dreams must come to an end, so Nahida sighs and focuses on more important matters. Such as, the stunned girl with white hair sprawled on her knees, leaflets nestled in her braid. She looks up at Nahida with a completely bewildered expression. It’s like looking into a mirror.
Nahida looks down. Black knee length shorts.
“Oh. Whoopsies.”
“Whoopsies,” Scaramouche says, and her own voice comes out. “That’s all you’ve got? Whoopsies?”
Sometimes, getting to know a person is to walk a mile in their shoes, literally. Other times it’s taking pictures of the things you like, and going for joyrides in the middle of the night. It’s about finding a friend you never knew you needed, in the last place you’d ever look. About wishing you were worth sticking around for, and realizing you were enough all along.

In the forest, the cicadas chirp at night, interrupting her words every now and then. The bake-danuki burrow next to her feet is a small, empty hole. No one is listening to her, no one but the night sky.
“I think what I need is to know that I’m doing the right thing. You know what taking Visions is like, little creature?” She leans down and snatches one of the gold coins the bake-danuki have in their tiny paws. They start screeching indignantly. “Like that. I do that in the name of the Shogun. I take away what people hold dear, for the sake of eternity.”
“I need to know, little creature. Am I doing the right thing?”
She is just another cog in the machine that serves the Raiden Shogun.

Ningguang’s breath trembles out of her. It is a problem how easily the staff let Beidou in; it's as if she lives here. Ningguang will have to talk to them.
Somehow, she never finds the time for that.
She eyes the satchel, left behind on purpose. Beidou knew Ningguang would have to open it to determine what had been lost, and if its owner could be found. For something so small, unless it is unique, she doubts she can.
Curiosity is bright in her mind, brighter in her soul. What would Beidou give her? She reaches for the satchel and unfastens its knot.
