Summary
Broken after the death of his beloved companion Sherlock Holmes and his beloved wife Mary Watson, Watson sheds London entirely and takes a post as a ship surgeon. It's a decent life - far away from the one he knew, and enough to fill his hours. All of that changes when the ship pulls a lone survivor of a raft onboard, and as Watson investigates the poor half-dead fellow, he finds a familiar face indeed.

Basil Hallward!
The man who had ever so skilfully captured the wonderous beauty of Dorian Gray had now arrested, with similar talent, the young man’s heartless and furious temperament and framed it for the world to see! This painter had manifested the future sins of his muse and woven them silently into his canvas, allowing them only to be revealed when the subject revealed them himself. How iniquitous of the artist to torment him like this; and how immoral of an artwork he had painted!
But no!
Of course not!If Basil had, like he confessed to Dorian during one particularly long session of sitting, put any part of himself into this picture then it was all but confirmed to Dorian that the wickedness he’d seen in his painted reflection had been a result of anything but the painting itself. Perhaps a trick of the night, or a symptom of his sour mood after coming home from the theatre. Anything but the pigment of the paints themselves and the brushstrokes that had laid them down onto the canvas.
Nothing so malevolent could be crafted by the hand of Basil Hallward.

Dorian decides to seek out Basil's help before the portrait becomes anymore corrupted than it already has.

“You flatter me, Basil Hallward.” Basil’s name came out delightfully low, as if it curled around Dorian’s tongue and teeth before exiting between his lips. The painter was instantly sweating.
“Oh, you know it.” Basil shook his head, flustered. “You know you’re good looking.”
"Really.” Dorian raised an eyebrow. “Which part of me then, Basil, do you think is the best looking?”
Basil slumped against the wall dramatically, rubbing a hand underneath his round-framed glasses. “Oh, Dorian. Don’t do this to me.” He felt as if Dorian had felt underneath his skin and pressed his nails into his pumping, swelling heart. He was in a state.
“All right.” Dorian pursed his lips before laying himself back against the daybed. “Carry on being a mysterious artist.” His mouth quirked up slightly. “I find it charming.”

You might ask: how did this absurd situation come about, when your coworker wouldn’t even lend you a light — when you saw you as beneath the soles of his shining shoes, his sterling position? Look at your senior. How he glitters in the dim like a miniature sun — a star that’s starved its neighboring galaxies of light to feed its fire.
(Perhaps you’re just an infinitesimal gnat whining in his ear. Maybe he’ll even give you the time of day… once you’ve gotten a little higher on the corporate ladder, that is. Using the proverbial corpses of cut losses as footholds for the meager chance of a raise.)
