Did something happen? Was there a fire? He’s distracted from his thoughts by the feeling of something scraping against his foot. His foot jerks away without any conscious thought. A nurse glances up and writes something down on a clipboard before asking, “Eddie? Can you blink your eyes for me?” Eddie complies. It takes effort, a lot more than it should but, he does.
“Good. That’s good, Eddie. Do you know who this is? Blink once for yes, twice for no,” the doctor says. He’s gesturing to Buck. Eddie blinks once, his eyes focused on Buck’s face.
“Reflexes are still intact. Sensation appears present, and responses are appropriate for what we would expect transitioning out of a minimally conscious state,” the doctor explains. Buck is nodding along like this makes sense.
Minimally conscious state? What does that mean?
December. They said December. Wait. Minimally conscious state? That’s a coma, right? Has he been in a coma?

It sounds like he's about to hang up when he finally says, “also...Marc, your mother—your mother says hello. Yes, I know. I know. I know you don’t want to but Marc—please listen. She’s trying....that’s not fair, Marc....I know. I know! Marc, I can't understand you! Please don’t hang up—”
Elias removes the phone from his ear and sighs. Wendy can hear the dial tone from where she’s sitting.
“Maybe he’ll...maybe he’ll come around,” Elias says but he’s shaking his head again. Almost like his body knows the answer before his mind does.
Maybe Marc will come around.
Maybe he won’t.
