TITLE: Light-based spell with pressure-activated overlapping ring (colloq., “The Glowstone Path”)
DESCRIPTION: Produces hands-free, maintenance-free illumination of paved footpaths for both public safety and decorative purposes. The sigil and signs are cut into the inside-facing surfaces of the stone, eliminating physical wear and the need for regular redrawing of the seal. The pressure-activation mechanism (i.e., by stepping on the top stone) leaves the spell dormant when not in use (i.e., being stepped upon), allowing the spell to be perpetually self-regenerating. As all components of the spell are concealed beneath the top stone, it is acceptable for Unknowing as well as Witch usage.

Summary
There it was, that thing Qifrey did, where he offered a piece of himself wrapped in observation about someone else, like a gift hidden inside a gift, and you had to decide whether to unwrap the second layer or pretend you had only received the first. Olruggio had spent half his life learning to read these offerings and in doing so he had become the foremost scholar of a language spoken by exactly one person in all the world.
"I'm stubborn because someone has to be," he said. "You'd float away on your own mysteries if no one kept you tethered."
"Perhaps." The maddingly sad smile again. "Perhaps that's so."
In which Olruggio brings tea to Qifrey's study on a damp evening and finds him working in the dark again, the staff out and the fire dying.

"Say Qifrey…” Olly rests his crossed arms on the bank. “You don't know how to swim, right?”
Qifrey jolts in place as if struck, pen falling from his grasp. Olruggio surely knows he doesn’t, having saved Qifrey from drowning the first time they met. He also knows how much he loathes water; loathes the sensation of being wet so much he must be coaxed like a feral animal to the baths each week—bribed with the promise of baked goods and adventures—just to keep him from roaming the Great Hall looking like an unkempt vagabond. With Olruggio taking over the task of washing his hair for him as he shudders through it.
Qifrey frowns deeply, not meeting his eye. “...No.”

Qifrey was forced to squeeze his eye shut against the initial flare of light, but the ragged pillar of radiance tearing towards the clouds seemed to imprint itself against the inside of his eyelid anyway, leaving a ghostly afterimage. When he could squint to watch the thing directly, his breath caught in his throat.

“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.

Honestly I shouldn't even post it here at all, since AO3 is complicit in LITERAL SEX TRAFFICKING and ABUSE by allowing just anyone to post whatever they want. But it's the best website for posting fic. What am I supposed to do, raise money to pay for servers and use AO3's entirely, 100% open source code to start a new site that upholds REAL MORALITY? Fugo was punished for speaking out against them, but life would continue as normal the next day. Well, sometimes they would give him a cold shoulder, and sometimes they would threaten to stop paying for his education, but once he apologized and asked for their forgiveness everything would be okay again.
Except for now, apparently. Fugo’s parents had been at their wits end with his “attitude”, and instead of doing the logical thing and getting him help, they decided to punish him more. After their most recent argument where Fugo finally admitted that he didn’t even want to study law, they decided to push back his internship until the following summer and teach him a “proper lesson”. Now Fugo was on his way to this place called the Bucciarati Family Farm. He barely had had time to get info on the place before his bags were being packed and his driver was whisking him away from his house. His brothers sneakily laughed at him the whole time he was leaving, and since he was feeling spiteful he spit on one of their shoes as he walked by. Fuck them, fuck everyone here.
(Basically, Fugo is sent to work on a farm for the summer as punishment, but it ends up being the best decision ever made for him.)
