Every breath was a battle. Your nose was a completely blocked, useless appendage, forcing you to breathe through your mouth, which had dried out into a stale, cottony wasteland. You tried to sniff, a desperate, hopeful attempt to clear a single nostril, but it only resulted in a loud, wet, and wholly ineffective sound that echoed in the quiet room. A dull, throbbing ache had taken up permanent residence behind your eyes, pulsing in time with your heartbeat. Your throat was raw, each swallow feeling like you were trying to gulp down shattered glass.
You shifted, trying to find a cool spot on the pillow, but your entire body was a mess of conflicting temperatures. One moment you were burning up, kicking the heavy quilts off with a frustrated groan. The next, a bone-deep chill would wrack your frame, sending you scrambling to pull the blankets back up to your chin, shivering uncontrollably. The fine linen of your nightclothes was stuck to your skin with a clammy, unpleasant sweat.

He’s never thought much about weddings, as romantic relationships as a whole didn’t interest him for years, and he can’t say he understands the point of them― nothing would change about him and Edgar, if not maybe a decorative title, and the months of meticulous planning that come before the ceremony sound like a pain.
He’s ready to dismiss the idea entirely, but it takes him exactly two seconds to deduce that Edgar does care about marriage. A lot.

He is not in the Orphanage. He's not. He's free, now, he's gone, the Headmaster is gone, or at least far away from him, and Atsushi, curled up in the closet, the whirring of the fan sputtering in his ear, a reminder that he's not there anymore, doesn't know what to do.
Leaving had never been an option. Only the good children got adopted—And Atsushi, as he knew, was not a good child. Cruel smiles, cruel hands, cruel words shouted across cold stone floors taught him that. And then he'd been kicked out, and he'd found a alleyway of stray cats and someone kind enough to take him in, and now…
Atsushi isn't at the Orphanage anymore, but its effects still linger. (Or: Five times Kunikida's care confused Atsushi, one time he realized why, and another time Kunikida had to deal with his own past.)

For the first time, Atsushi had completely and utterly failed a mission.
He would have to be punished. The President was powerful, he knew—years of experience had taught Atsushi how to tell, how to know where a blow would land. The President was kind, too, but surely there would be some consequences for this. That was how it worked.
Atsushi's hands did not shake. They weren't allowed to. He dug his fingernails into his palms and felt the pain spike in them. (The feeling matched the wound on his side, slowly healing with the help of Byakko, red staining his clothes.) It numbed him, and when he released his fist, he could feel sticky blood on his palm. It would prepare him for what was to come.
Or: Fukuzawa Yukuchi is not the Headmaster.
