Summary
The day Near discovers his favourite book is a Thursday.
It’s two weeks to the day since the death of Kira- since justice was murdered and reborn on the damp concrete floor of a disused warehouse. Near doesn’t particularly care about all that, anymore.
What interests him now are the two hand-typed manuscripts hidden in Matt and Mello’s Kyoto apartment. One is an account of the LABB murder case. The other documents the L.A. underworld through the eyes of a teenage genius… and a long-ago meeting between Mello and Beyond Birthday- the precursor to an obsession with both the world’s greatest detective and his murderous doppelganger.
“Matt, I figure my odds are fifty-fifty (in the sense that I either make it back, or don’t). In the event of my tragic, yet doubtless thrilling, demise- because you never stopped needing to know, and because it’s too long and difficult a story to tell aloud- this is what happened in the mafia.”

Summary
Matt's share of their surveillance duty is both lonely and painfully boring. He's never had the drive of Mello or the focus of Near, and he doesn't have a clue where this investigation is going any more- if it's going anywhere at all. And, sure, he might have fallen back into an old habit, but it's really not a big deal.
It's lucky his one and only friend has a clue, at least. It's lucky they're used to patching one another up.

Summary
L knows that Light Yagami is guilty. And he is forced to accept that he will never be able to prove it.
So, just this once, he decides to break his principles and go above the law. He kidnaps Light and takes him to Wammy's house.
He's sure that having the kids interact with a real-life mass murderer will be a very educational experience indeed.
Or: Light is Kira, L is sick of how easily manipulated the police are, and he secretly wants to see what will happen if he forces Light into a domestic situation with children just as intelligent as he is.

"The thing about getting rid of useless pride is that it is a scaffolding built of years. It takes more than the work of a moment; though you are begging in the windowless cell. What was I thinking, putting myself in here? You don’t remember. It’s beginning to disturb you, how much you don’t remember; although when you close your eyes and follow the trail—one event follows upon the other just as you had expected it to; and you can even recall the first time Kira killed, when all you saw was a reporter’s face through the screen of your TV. It was the end of your boredom, because though you were nothing but a spectator to the great battle, you already felt how Kira and L would pull you along in their wake just as any battle between titans would (because you would stand within the event horizon, if only to get closer).
Perhaps that is where you are now. In the quiet dark within the black hole, where your self, gaunt and unfamiliar to you, has already irrevocably been altered. (Suspect. Name: Yagami Light.)"
