“You said you had a proposal.” Light inquires, though it comes out as more of a statement. He didn’t want to seem too curious, that could only worsen his predicament.
“I do.” L’s fingers curl loosely around his knees. “Controlled environment. Limited variables. Constant observation.” The words rolled off his tongue the way someone might describe a simple experiment. “Of course,” he added, nearly as an afterthought, “It would require your cooperation.”
“And if I refuse?” Light was testing the waters— waiting for the catch.
L breaks their prolonged eye contact to retrieve his cup of tea. “Then I would have no choice but to draw conclusions from that refusal.”

Catching Higuchi as the kira should’ve been the turning point.
L disagrees.
He’s still suspicious of Light, but also suspicious of himself now. What if his personal unwillingness to admit that his claims were indeed wrong - is the main reason for still suspecting Light? To test that theory, and his two successors while he’s at it, he moved Light, Mello and Near in with him. And let’s just say… it turned out more interesting than anticipated.

A small oversight in Light’s plan to outsmart L leads everybody on the Task force, including his own father, to believe he’s gay.
Strangely enough, this misunderstanding has somehow cleared all of L’s suspicions of him being Kira. A win is a win, I suppose.
Of course, Light isn’t actually gay. He’s just pretending, so L will stop investigating him. Or at least…thats what he tells himself.

Settling into the new Kira Task Force headquarters after Light's time in captivity, L makes the decision to be chained to Light and with him 24/7. This decision was, on the surface, meant to create pressure for his prime suspect and to disallow Kira committing more murders under his watch. However, Light is no longer sure exactly why he insisted that he be put into captivity, and he does not quite seem like he remembers or possesses the power to commit murder from a remote location.
As the two of them coexist with forced proximity at all hours of the day, questions of dignity, personal space, and the nature of their relationship arise, all while Light deals with the fact that his father seems to give his ongoing consent to this situation.
