Soda was manning the pumps, so Steve went to the register and rang up candy bars, pops, and whatever other after-school snacks the hoard of kids surrounding them wanted. Johnny grabbed a bottle of Pepsi and a stool, took a seat beside Steve, and watched.

Summary
The spot they picked had plenty of room for the three of them. Pop started to show Tex what to do, while Mason moved to where his line wouldn’t get tangled with Tex’s. He didn’t pay much attention to them and just let his mind focus on nothing except for what he was doing.
But then after a few minutes, after Tex had successfully cast his line by himself three times, Pop picked up his pole and tackle box and the gunny sack to keep the fish in and started walking. And that sure caught Mason’s attention.

Summary
Steve knew Soda was trying to cheer him up, but he just sighed and looked back down at his arm. He thought it was stupid because he didn’t know why he’d gotten so upset in the first place. He should’ve been able to handle anything from his dad, no matter how cruel. He should’ve been used to it.
And he wasn’t sure that his dad would even be that mad about the tattoo. He started to convince himself that the old man wouldn’t even care, or maybe wouldn’t even notice. It didn’t matter. It was pointless.

Darry isn’t so sure his knees aren’t going to buckle underneath him as he walks down the porch steps. The sight of the truck –Dad’s truck– makes his stomach twist and the thought of getting in and driving makes him want to fall to the ground. But someone has to do it.
He’s just about to get in when he hears the door to the house open again and slam shut. Dally’s the culprit, walking across the yard towards him.

Girlsiders 1964–5 – or, how Sandy, Sylvia, Evie, and Kathy each hook up with their boys for the first time, and their own girl gang clicks into place.
Sort of a prequel to a much longer fic I wrote, which covers June – November 1965 (and beyond…), but this can be read standalone, too. It’s just a fun (and much more lighthearted) exploration of all the slutty relationship lore and calm before the war, expanding on my character background notes from Heavenly Nobodies. Title is from the Cocteau Twins song.
