No one would have to know. He could feed his urges then promptly cover his tracks. Toss the scarf into the washer, hang it out to dry, iron it even and return it to her. A better plan would be to wait a few days, make her think it was lost forever before playing the hero. Increase the chances of Sydney looking at him with anything other than annoyance for the first time in ages.
The greatest detractor was that he would know. When she would flash a grateful smile or wear the scarf to work again, he would have to live with the transgression eating him from the inside out.
Carmy loathes himself for even considering this. Nevertheless, he takes a seat on the bench and unbuckles his belt. If he could live with never truly having Sydney, he could live with this. Carmy was a mascochist by nature after all.

These were the hard facts. Facts she kept repeating over and over to keep herself grounded. Keep herself sane. Carmy used to stand unassailable on the pedestal she built for him in her emerald youth. Carmy used to be her boss at the Beef. Carmy was the Executive Chef at the Bear. Carmy was her partner.
Carmy was currently two fingers deep in Sydney, thong to the side, pushing her up against the door of his apartment as she sweated out her silk press.

Sydney gave a wan smile. “You look so handsome.” To which Carmy doesn’t answer, looking right through her as if she wasn’t there at all.
“Hey.” She said softly, straightening the tie before kissing his jaw. A sad attempt to pull him out of whatever hole he was currently stuck in.
He's off somewhere distant. Past their bedroom walls, out the apartment, down the 3 flights of stairs and out the lobby door to the busy sidewalk below. If she could guess, dodging a crowd of pedestrians, legs picking up speed trying to run into tomorrow, away from the assured misery today held.
