Summary
Tommy had seemed happy with the way their dynamic was progressing, and it’s not like he’d never bottomed again during their relationship. He’d done it all the time: bent over the kitchen island, up against the shower wall, on his hands and knees on the bed or the couch or the floor. Buck had fucked Tommy like that and never thought about it beyond yes good Tommy yes. Tommy had moaned and pushed back against him, and that same magic that always brewed between them popped and fizzed and bubbled over.
So Buck hadn’t thought about it. From the beginning, he had been struck with the near inability to think much around Tommy at all. Their relationship had been such a fuckdrunk blur of easy pleasure and simple joy that Buck hadn’t been able to see that Tommy had been avoiding receiving the intimacy that he gave to Buck.
That changes after they get back together.

Tommy shook his head, blushing even more. “Doesn’t hurt,” he murmured, burying his mouth in the rim of his coffee cup. “Opposite.”
“It feels good?” It was clear that Buck would have to keep this conversation going, Tommy shying away from it like never before.
“Bit too good,” he finally confessed. “I come real easy.”
“Y-yeah?” Buck asked, having to stop himself from asking, You promise?

Summary
“Thanks,” Tommy says softly, taking the records. “Sorry.”
“You keep saying that, but I don't know why,” Buck says, aiming for teasing and just sounding as concerned as he feels.
Tommy's lips press together, and he blinks right before his eyes get shiny. “My father died last week.”
Buck remembers the shocked, numb feeling that followed him for days after Bobby died. Weeks, really. But he knows Tommy had a complicated relationship with his dad, even though he rarely talked about it. Just like they rarely talked about anything.
“I'm sorry,” he says, even though it feels insufficient. “Did you eat today?”
--
Buck runs into Tommy and helps him navigate the complications of grief and final arrangements.

Summary
Buck slides a beer Tommy's way and fights the urge to duck his head. "So, I just thought, maybe, if you wanted to, we could -."
"I'm seeing someone," Tommy says, and blinks, and stares at the label of his bottle.
"Oh," Buck says, and shoves the hurt down deep where it won't inconvenience anyone. That's - it's been - been longer than they were ever together, hasn't it? And, yeah, after that comment in the helicopter maybe Buck had had this expectation that Tommy would wait for him, but that wasn't fair to assume, was it? It's - they're - "I... I'm happy for you."
Tommy gives him a strange look.

Summary
Harsh breaths, the crack of dried twigs under sure footsteps, and the whisper of cloth are the only sounds keeping Buck company as he treks through the undergrowth. The trees grow tall and close in this section of the woods, their canopy dense, shutting out the night sky. He’s enclosed in a cocoon without so much as the buzz of an insect to break the illusion of solitude since leaving the path. Hitching his bag higher he continues on his way and the trees watch him go.

Summary
In the wake of another bust during his apartment hunt, Buck winds up at the place he feels safest - with Tommy. A shared night ends in a shared morning, setting Buck on a path of realization and growth. He has to examine where his place is and whether he can continue existing in the exceedingly suffocating environment of the firehouse that was once his home.
Choices must be made, and perhaps, it is for the best if Buck does like everyone says and is actually selfish.

Summary
Tommy laughs, as much as it can be called a laugh when he can barely get the air to do it, but his breath still grazes against Buck’s lips, the ghost of what he really wants. It’s warm, and Tommy’s still looking at him, and it’s been eighteen days, and he’s baked on nearly every one of them. They’re in a crashed helicopter and Tommy’s pinned down and it’s a terrible idea and it’s been eighteen days, he’s counted every one, and-
Buck kisses him.
Tommy's helicopter goes down. Buck copes.
Kind of.
Hey - he never said he was coping well.

Summary
A tenth of what keeps California running hails from the hearth of this modern relic. It’s legitimately riveting. The scale of it is nearly unfathomable.
How is it possible that Tommy's the same age as this monolith of the nuclear age? It jars him, it humbles him. Both of them have spent forty years going and going, not stopping for breath.
—
Tommy and Evan find each other again. All it takes is a power plant, a corrupt fire chief, and a couple of exes.

Summary
It's been months since Buck's life was irrevocably changed and he's still adjusting to the new normal. He's starting to think it's a process that never really stops.
Part of that new normal finds him at a bar on Friday night with Hen and Chimney. And Tommy. Because they're friends now.
Buck watches in amusement as Hen and Chimney battle over a bowl of cocktail pickles set on the table between them.
Tommy leans further into Buck's space, pressing their thighs together and overwhelming Buck's senses. Every point of contact between them sets his skin on fire. "What is happening right now?"

Summary
He pulls Evan against him and hugs him, and Evan sinks against him, burying his face in Tommy's shoulder. He's not sobbing, but Tommy can feel moisture leak through his shirt.
“He'd appreciate the effort,” Tommy says softly, and Evan's shoulders hitch as he lets out a quick, quiet little laugh. “But he wouldn't want you to torture yourself.”
“I don't know what else to do.”
Tommy hugs him tighter, and Evan's arms squeeze him with equal strength. “This, to start.”
--
Tommy runs into his ex at another bar. Only this time, they talk and Tommy shows off his kittens (this is not a euphemism).

Summary
Buck moves in on a Saturday. It’s a small house, but that’s okay. With each successive move Buck had gotten rid of more and more belongings. He doesn’t have much left at this point.
Eddie helps him move boxes and furniture from storage to his truck and from his truck into his new house. With a lunch break, the entire process only takes three hours. It’s all a bit anticlimactic. Eddie offers to help him unpack, since they have so much time, but the idea settles too heavy in Buck’s stomach. Moving boxes is one thing. Moving in is something else entirely.
This is the first place that Buck has ever lived in that he picked out for himself. He’s feeling a little precious about that. He doesn’t want someone else to decide which drawer his utensils should be in. He’s had enough of other people telling him where to put things.
