    Summary

Grace’s first days on Erid are not easy. In fact, he’s so sick and wounded from starvation, scurvy, and an almost-crash that he barely remembers it. What he does remember is the betrayal and pain that he experienced on Earth.

Lucky for him, his best friend left him in good hands. Now if he could only figure out who that is and if he’s safe with them.

Grace, shakily, reaches his hand out to Adrian. Adrian places their claw atop of his hand, and they regard each other for a long time.

“You’re not alone, Adrian.” He smiles, “he’s back. You’re okay.”

“Grace not alone, either.” Grace grimaces. The fear of not being accepted on Erid is reinforced with a flood of a lifetime of memories from Earthly rejection.

“Grace not alone!” Adrian stomps again, sensing Grace’s heartbeat getting faster.

“Grace have Rocky. Grace have Adrian. Grace have new home. Better than Earth home. Erid not send Grace to die.”

Grace blinks rapidly, realizing Rocky must have told Adrian about the suicide mission.

    Summary

Tango’s been messing around in the undercity a lot, lately. And I’ve heard he’s gotten close with that one thief, the guy with the ladders who supposedly knows all the tunnels. If there’s anyone in Hermitopia who’s got easy access to weird strains of sculk, it’d be him. Forgery isn’t likely to reveal anything about his lair to Smoke Signal, but maybe if Impulse asked Tango…

Impulse shakes that thought clear from his head. It isn’t necessary, not yet. Pearl would scold him for revealing his identity to someone again—she only barely agreed to the alliance with Dr. Zedaph. Impulse knows he can trust Zed to keep a secret, and Tango would never betray them either, but…

It’s not a necessary risk, Impulse tells himself firmly.

Besides, all that is a matter for Smoke Signal. Tonight, he’s Impulse—the friendly local bartender meeting up with his three favorite regulars. Tonight, they set down their masks together and make-believe that the world hasn’t gone crazy.

    Tonight, they play poker.”

“I call.” Smoke Signal pushes in a stack of chips. “And I raise another ten. You’ll have to try harder if you wanna scare me away.”

Zed giggles and matches Smoke Signal’s bet.

“Is that what you think I’m doing?” Forgery says, shoving more chips forward. “Trying to scare you?”

“I don’t think you know what you’re doing.”

Smoke Signal draws the final community card—the river.

It’s the queen of hearts. Smoke Signal chuckles.

“Not that I care either way,” he says. “All in.”

    “All in!” Zed crows.

    Forgery surges to his feet.

“Care?” Forgery snarls. “Of course you don’t care, you scum-slime-jerkface-monster! If you did you wouldn’t—he wouldn’t—“

    “Top!”

One sharp word from Skizz stops Forgery short, and—

    No. I’m wrong.

Forgery is a showman, a crafted imitation of a villain purely in it for the spectacle, for the experience. Forgery wouldn’t sit down at Impulse’s table with veiled insults and pent-up anger—he’d parade his fury down the street with an army of ravagers; he’d laser-carve Smoke Signal’s offenses into the steps of City Hall, he’d construct an elaborate treasure hunt whose every clue is a personal insult and invite the world to play.

It isn’t Forgery facing him now. It’s Tango. Which means whatever this is, it isn’t a performance. It isn’t “business.” It’s personal. It’s real.

    Summary

“ Anger is a tangible thing. It grips Tango’s temples with iron pincers. It flows down his spine like molten metal. It hammers in his chest like a blacksmith at an anvil, forging for Tango a blade to clench between his teeth.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Tango starts washing Impulse’s face. Fine tendrils stick there in matted clumps. Tango eases his fingers underneath and peels them away, careful not to tug at the skin around the eyes.

Oh god, the sculk got all the way up to his eyes. Another minute—

“You gonna say anything, Impy? Huh? You gonna answer for yourself?”

Tango shouts it into Impulse’s face. Impulse, still blank, twitches. Stirs.

“I didn’t…” Impulse says, hoarse and weak. “I didn’t know it was Jimmy.”

    “Ha!”

Tango draws away to stop his hands from clenching into fists around Impulse’s hair.

“That makes it all better then! Everyone knows it’s okay to kill strangers. They don’t matter! You can murder all you want, so long as nobody cares! Hey, Impy!”

    Summary

It's not jealousy. Adrian is adamant about that. They are actually insisting that it’s not any emotion at all. Not even dislike. They are simply completely uninterested in anything that concerns “the human”.

Rocky believes them. Adrian has always been the level-headed one out of the two of them. They are too logical to be jealous. They acknowledge that Grace and Rocky have a special bond after everything they went through together and also understand that none of that will ever pose a threat to their relationship.

Neither are they heartless or ungrateful. They know that Grace is the only reason that Rocky is back at all, the only reason their star has stopped dying. Adrian has told Rocky again and again that they are grateful and happy and wish the alien no ill will. They even helped with the construction of the biodome.

And yet they have no desire to get to know Grace.

You know those videos where the dad is like "You may keep the cat but I will have nothing to do with it" and a few days later they are smothering the kitty with cuddles and love?

    Adrian never stood a chance.

    Summary

Everything was too soft. I wanted pressure. The last time I'd felt that had been when I'd been squeezed in between my chair and the monitors, and that hadn't exactly been pleasant. I wanted someone, on purpose, to press against my skin and muscle, and I wanted to feel it.

Just the thought of it made me want to weep.

    God, I was pathetic.

Grace gets a hug (after being very dramatic about it.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

Rocky looked desperate, letting out small, calming whirrs every once in a while that didn’t translate to anything.

Eventually, very, very slowly, I drank the rest of the concoction. It seemed to make Rocky feel better, so it was worth it, even though I was now trying my best to lie as still as possible, so that it wouldn’t come right back up.

You’d think that when you were starving, your body would want every last drop of whatever it could get, but apparently, it wasn’t so in my case. Well, it had been at first, but now it just seemed to be… too much.

”Rest now,” Rocky told me, setting the mug aside clumsily.

”Yeah,” I whispered. ”Are you busy?”

Rocky’s carapace shifted a little, ”No. Why, question?”

I put on a small smile.

”I was kind of hoping that you would spend some time with me.”

He didn’t even have to say anything for me to know that his mood immediately shifted for the better as he perked up at my words.
