    Summary

A failed prototype was a disappointment, obviously. It was a bigger disappointment still considering that all the others stepped off the roof with noble dreams of taking to the sky and ended up as a lot of hassle for elementary physics on the ground. When someone hallucinates they can fly, people tend to look away; when someone dreams they can fly, the lawn chairs come out. It was the same mess in the end, with the added disadvantage that you’d handily and publicly crush every dream adjacent to yours. And, er, other dreamers, if you were really ambitious.

But the Enemypedia was being filled, one comically large enemy at a time. In convoluted and moronic ways, that stupid book was slowly but surely driving the machine forward. It had spawned a lot of questionable ambitions, all of which ended up in the scrap heap, but the book was being filled.

In which the NPCs of Colony 9 chance upon the Enemypedia, and in attempting to do their part to fix the world come to realize a whole lot of unfortunate things about it.

And the railgun. There's also a railgun.

    Summary

So here you are: two heroes who woke up on the other side of the day and realized that heroism is a human creation and that the world spins on. So hey, Pixy. If the world doesn’t love you, then who does? There’s a man following in your shadow, ready to mark down your final words and bury you with dignity you aren’t sure you deserve. So hey, Pixy. How do you deserve it? How do you die with dignity? How do you give him your final words?

I think I love you. Can I hold your hand?

Don’t mess it up, Pixy. You’re still heroes today.

He breathes out a slow, steady breath. It’s cold, he says. Let’s go back.

You swallow your heart. You breathe, too. “Yeah,” you say. “Let’s go.”

In which we are already living in the end of the world. In which the apocalypse has come and we are irrevocably alive. So what now. What then.

So hey: will you survive the future, for as long as you can bear?

    Summary

“It is not a sin to want to take control of your life.”

“No, but it is to do so by taking control of someone else’s. Is that what you’re getting at?”

Personas embody rebellion. They manifest from the fucking clashing of tectonic plates. An earth-shattering catastrophe localized around an individual who has had enough. You don’t have to be good. You don’t even have to be special. You just have to root yourself to the ground and claw your heart out, bleeding and breathing and hungry.

You want to break me? Then come and try.

The words die in Goro’s throat. “Who knows,” he says, turning away.

In which there are a million ways to live and die, and the stagehands are arguing with each other. The curtain's halfway down but the show's not over. A boy peddles offstage silence, trying to sell his story while the theater empties out.

Or: Goro Akechi makes do with what he has, what he is, and what he will be.

    Summary

“Oh, you’re lovely,” Akira breathes. “Don’t worry. I’ll give you as many second chances as you desire.”

Goro tries to create distance out of nothing. His back presses against the shaking bones of the carriage. Akira’s fingertips never leave his skin. “I—I didn’t ask for—whatever you have to give me.”

“No, but you did plead,” Akira says softly. “You want your life back. I can grant you that. I’m no arbiter of life and death, space and time, but regret is a potent thing.” A cold finger travels down Goro’s neck, coming to a rest between his collarbones. Akira’s smile is gentle but distant, an astronomer enraptured with the light of a galaxy long dead. “One more chance. Just one. And afterward, if you tell me just one more, it’ll be yours.”

Eighteen years and eight months, and Goro is still a fool.

In which there are a million ways to live and die, and Goro Akechi has a thousand second chances.

    Summary

Duel Monsters was one of those games: the kind you’d definitely heard of somewhere, whether it be on the news or in ads or in an article about horrible incidents involving lots of collateral damage.

If you were lucky, you’d have Yugi’s phone number on hand and could avoid troublesome explosions altogether. Not because he had a particularly good track record when it came to not destroying the city, but because he was friendly and if worst came to worst it was still easier to duck under a Black Burning than a Blue Stream of Destruction.

This was Johanna’s current dilemma. One could even call it a conundrum.

In which an exorcist, a chair-wielding accountant, and the King of Games walk into a haunted town.

    Summary

“How did you get here,” Vanea demands, a lot more hostile than Tyrea’s used to, “and of all the many valuable, defunct pieces of machinery in Agniratha, why did you choose to raid the ether accelerator? Why are you still standing in the chamber?

Shulk shuffles his feet but makes no attempt to move. “It’s... kind of a long story?”

“I have time,” Vanea says sharply.

“Well, this should be fun,” Tyrea mumbles, though clearly not quietly enough, because now Vanea’s giving her the evil side-eye. “Awesome. Wonderful. Fall in, team. Let’s tell this story exactly how it stands.”

In which Shulk, Melia, and Tyrea come to the unfortunate realization that spacetime is a lot more fragile than it seems, and doing the right thing while going fast is seriously a pain.

    Summary

Shulk stood between the meeting of two worlds. Something rippled beneath his feet, rumbling deep along the scars of an unsteady reality. The empty above shone blue, then red, then black. One star burned brighter than the rest.

There was a dead god, some ways away. He was silent. He was still. He would speak, given time to think and grieve.

But in that short reprieve, one star streaked down from the sky.

“Good morning,” it said, and suddenly Shulk knew: Alvis. We were friends, once. “We have a great deal of work ahead of us.”

In which Shulk navigates a world of his own creation, between an end and a beginning.

    Summary

“I see and know everything whether I want to or not, because the universe hates me,” Grima explains. “Okay, so you two are finally getting married, thank the gods. That’s me! I’m a god. You’re welcome. So what kind of theme do you want to go for? And where are you going to live? Plegia’s pretty nice once you get used to the sand, the sand, and also the sand. Obviously I won’t complain about the occasional vacation to Ylisstol, since your... mountain vistas... aren’t half bad. Are you listening? Are you alive? Did I just break you?”

“I’m listening,” Chrom says weakly, his poor little brain struggling to keep up.

In which Grima is born into an existential crisis, accidentally nudges history the wrong way, and tries to make do in a world that is objectively more chaotic than he is.

Edward Elric is about eleven when he stands up, makes an extended effort to knock as many books off the old bastard’s shelves as he can, and says, “Fuck the military. Al, you interested in music at all?”

Everybody's got their own ideas of retirement.

The Elrics don't even do retirement, what with the world trying to blow itself up every other month, but this shit has got to take the fucking cake.

    Summary

“It’s not a quirk,” Izuku tells the poor sod, who looks like he needs to catch up on four years of sleep and has been combating that fact with caffeine pills and spite alone. “It’s breathing. I’m literally just breathing. Do you want me to stop breathing?” he demands. When Eraserhead glares at him like he’s murdered someone (which he has, technically, but what is someone, really), Izuku sniffs righteously and says, “Stop glaring at me!”

    Eraserhead takes a deep breath.

“Breathing, yes, like that,” Izuku says eagerly. “Want to see me do it too?”

    “No,” says Eraserhead.

Midoriya Izuku's family tree may or may not include one Kamado Tanjirou.

    Summary

Despite what everyone thinks, Midoriya Izuku is a picky eater.

It's not his fault that paper tastes like wood and mint, or that lies leave a saltiness that prints itself onto his tongue for days. It's especially not his fault that quirks just so happen to taste like fizzy melon candies.

Nobody's ever said that picky eaters can't become heroes, though.

    Byleth sees ghosts.

This is both far less and far more complicated than it sounds.

In which Byleth contemplates the existence of ghost fish, earns herself a haunted sword or two, and slowly adds spirits to her arsenal. And no matter what Glenn says, she is not crazy, thank you very much.

    Summary

    Wei Wuxian wakes up.

This is not particularly strange nor out of the ordinary. Being awake is simply part of being alive.

    Wei Wuxian is alive.

There are stars in his eyes and oaths in his steps. His hands are made not for commanding the dead, but instead for weaving the golden strings of fate. Wei Wuxian is alive, and he has a duty to the world.

He owes the world nothing. He owes the world everything.

    Summary

Wei Ying is a god. This, he believes, is not as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

This is what he also believes:

Small towns are small blessings. An army of children is more powerful than any divine council. The bakery downtown sells the best egg sandwiches on this side of existence. Prayers are best answered in person. Death is only the end if you piss off Izanami. It's fine if he keeps his head down forever, because nobody's going to miss him anyway.

Finding out which one of the above is false, Wei Ying decides, is too much of a hassle to bother with.

    Summary

It was a river that stretched from the beginning of time to the end of all things. It didn't seem very big. Not when they were children.

Wei Wuxian had been good friends with the river. He loved it with all his heart, but not as much as he loved them. He said he had come from across the river to play with them.

Wen Qing said that Wei Wuxian had been out of his mind when he had a mind to spare, and that he had left all his sense in the old country. Wen Ning said it was a shame that the old country had broken in half.

Wen Qing said that he was wrong, and that the place that had broken in half wasn't the real old country.

She said Wei Wuxian had drowned the real old country.

Every day in the workshop is a good day.

Every day in the workshop means ideas, creativity, chaos, explosions, sweat and blood and maybe tears, if things get really exciting, more explosions if things get really, really exciting—what's not to love?

Oh, and there's the occasional client or two. Heroes come and go like the thrum of the machines: like heartbeats, they stutter, and they stroll in and out, and they're crazy in a dumb, dumb way, and they make for the most spectacular fun.

Yaoyorozu Momo? Oh hoh. Now that should be fun.

    Summary

Midoriya Izuku is quirkless. This, he knows very well.

This is also what he knows:

Weekends and vacations are reserved for walking neighborhood dogs. The elderly are the most powerful people on Earth. Local gods are picky eaters. Trust is a feeble, feeble thing. Magic cards are incredibly difficult to seal, especially when the world thinks you're a vigilante. Heroes are not magicians, but magicians can be heroes.

Becoming a cardcaptor wasn't on Izuku's bucket list, but he'll be damned if he doesn't make the best out of it.

Lance looks into the mirror. Wipes away the stars in his eyes and summons the storm in its place. He’s a dreamer, but his dreams are nothing in the grand void that is the universe and the endless ocean that is responsibility.

“You could be something,” he tells himself.

He bleeds emotion and uncertainty. If he looks back, he’s sure to see a trail of red that leads back as far as he’s walked.

So he looks forward. Walks slowly. Steadily. Whatever will come is sure to come. The future will not be the same.
