“It hadn’t used to bother him, but now it was a constant whispering voice in his head. His scar burned one night and when he went to splash water on his face, the red in his eyes was undeniable. Harry jerked back, hitting his head against the door.
It was just an illusion, he told himself after, turning the ring over again and again in a comforting motion that had become all too common.
There was something wrong with him. Grief counselors existed, Hermione had mentioned them before, but Harry didn’t think they would be able to help even if he wanted to find one. It had been easier to ignore when he could go to Diagon Alley even just to listen to people talk, to let the murmur of a crowd wash over him. He didn’t have that anymore. There was nothing to soothe him in Grimmauld Place. There was only Kreacher and the occasional screams from Walburga Black’s portrait, the odd creaks as Harry passed silently from floor to floor.
He continued to have nightmares. Sirius would fall through the veil and Harry would scream himself hoarse both in and out of the dream, or he’d return to the Riddle House or the graveyard, Cedric hitting the ground dull-eyed. Or it was Voldemort gloating, moments away from holding him under the Cruciatus curse again. He was beginning to go numb to it all.
Then one night when Harry woke from the dead of sleep, he wasn’t alone.
There was another boy in his room”.
