Summary
Samira, who was no stranger to Amma's deep obsession with love and marriage, had not thought about relationships since her last one broke down in college. She was too busy, after all, with residency and planning for a future fellowship god-knows-where, to get caught up in a whirlwind romance (or even a just-okay one). Men, though nice to look at and sometimes a much-needed distraction from medicine, were at the bottom of the totem pole of priorities.
Nevertheless, Amma was persistent. And Samira, who had tired of the same dead-end conversation being rehashed over and over again months ago, had done something terribly, awfully, stupid to shut her up.
She'd lied. It had seemed innocent enough at the time, a fib that no one would ever need to know about. Because Amma hated Pittsburgh, apparently, and had no plans of ever visiting her only daughter there. And Jack Abbot was single, which made it totally not crossing any lines, right?
Right?
OR
Samira gets caught in a lie when her mother becomes a patient at PTMC. The lie? That Dr. Jack Abbot is her boyfriend. And much to her surprise, Jack is willing to play along for a few days, as long as it helps keep her mother off her back.

Summary
“Look at him, Samira,” Jack says. The words seem lodged in his throat. He's forcing them out. “Sweetheart fucking face. And they were gonna kill him.”
He kisses the dog on the top of its head. And Samira usually finds that sort of behavior foreign and disgusting, but she puddles just a little more when she sees Jack Abbot do it.
“So you took a chance on him?” she says.
“What can I say?” Jack lifts the tags on his dog’s collar with a crook of his finger. Samira watches as they slide, metal on metal, identifying information, dents and dings—and she sees it, she aches as she sees it, that scrape of metal limbs and dog tags in gray matter memories. “I'm a sucker for lost fucking causes.”

Summary
“It’s weird, not having Robby here,” Mel is saying, dragging Samira back into the conversation between the residents. “And Dr Al-Hashimi hasn't shown up either.” That is strange, Samira thinks absently. Dr Bryan is back from semi-retirement to cover as attending, but the absence is noticeable. “I'm sure we can figure out how to be good teachers, but it’s a little harder when you don't have your mentor to help."
“I don’t know,” Samira mutters before she can stop herself, still staring at Dr Abbot’s letter on her screen. “Just do the opposite of whatever Robby would do.”
It’s only in the expanding silence afterward that Samira realizes she has said that it out loud.
In the wreckage left after the 4th of July shift, Samira starts gathering the shattered pieces of her life. The question now is in what order does she want to put them together.

Samira has long known that being friends with Robby is a character flaw. It had just never seemed so damning until now. It itched at her inion whenever Jack stared at her from across the ED. She pushed it away when he emailed case studies, because he was the only person not related to her who emailed her at all. She ignored it because she liked the way his callused hands brushed against the soft skin of her inner thighs and how his warm tongue felt heavy in her mouth. She craved the goosebump tingle that seemed to pulse at every nerve ending, at every millimeter of skin, whenever Jack’s attention focused solely on her at the end of a long day.

The cabinet swings open easily. Her eyes fall on the row laden with orange bottles of meds. Prazosin, for Johnathan Abbot, often prescribed for improving sleep, especially when the patient experiences frequent nightmares.
The eyes of Dr. Mohan, M.D., have already flicked to the high dose bottle of Pregabalin before the brain of Samira Mohan has fully registered the name. Johnathan Abbot.
Abbot? Her breathing hitches. As in, PTMC’s Dr. Jack Abbot?
Fuck, she thinks. I really shouldn’t throw up in this sink.
Samira Mohan is just trying to get a life outside of the hospital. She accidentally ends up with the keys to Jack Abbot’s townhouse.

She knows that the vision of Jack Abbot holding a baby in his arms shouldn’t tug at her heartstrings the way it does. It shouldn’t make her actually consider having a baby as a 3rd-year resident, especially when he refuses to tell her what he wants.
But she can’t stop thinking about it. Can’t stop thinking about what he would look like holding a bottle. Can’t stop thinking about a child that is half-Samira and half-him. A baby with her hair and his nose. A baby with her eyes and his freckles.

Samira Mohan doesn’t lose- Well, except maybe to anyone coached by Jack Abbot. The infuriatingly composed legend is responsible for every professional defeat on her record.
So when she’s knocked out of Wimbledon by a 17 year-old, coached by Jack, of course- Samira thinks it can’t get worse. Then he’s named head coach of Team USA for the Paris Olympics.
If she wants the one title she’s never won- Olympic gold- she’ll have to train under the man who’s not only outmaneuvered her for years, but who haunts her thoughts and dreams far more than she’d like to admit.
She hates him.
At least, she thinks she does.
