Maybe, if Mel had turned, started walking, and begun dissecting the case aloud, Frank wouldn’t have done what he did.
Or possibly, it had been inevitable from the day he came back, and she told him he’d never let her down and that she didn’t want him to leave. Or perhaps, it became inescapable before that, back to the first shift they worked together, which had been the worst day of his life, but she had been an effervescent bright spot amid his humiliation and defeat.
Instead of all the things she could have done, Mel’s breath caught in her throat. She looked up at him, her face soft and wide open with trust and something he wasn’t willing to name but looked an awful lot like adoration. She whispered, “You make me incredible.”
...He glanced up, checking to see who was around before he did something monumentally stupid, like kiss her in front of all their colleagues. But there was no one nearby or looking their way, and he didn’t realize what he was doing until he did it. He grasped Mel’s hand, spun her around, and tugged her with him into the handicapped bathroom, locking the door behind them.

Frank must have screamed. Maybe he cried out for help. He couldn’t be sure, as his whole world had tunneled down to the preternaturally still body of the woman he loved, splayed out in front of him on the cold trauma room floor. Her golden blonde hair was matted with drying blood, and on instinct he smoothed some of the strands from her forehead. Mel always hated when her hair was in her eyes, but they were closed now. It took everything in him to resist the urge to gather her broken body to his chest and hold her close as though he could infuse his life into hers. Instead, he lifted a shaky hand to the side of her neck to feel for a pulse. He was deeply certain that if he didn’t find one, his own heart would cease to beat as well.

The man's eyes were dark and venomous, looking directly at her in a way that she knew all too well.
The same darkness that filled men's eyes when you tried to distance yourself from them in store aisles, kindly turning down their offer to help reach an item on the top shelf. The dark eyes locking in when passing by a man late at night alone, trying to appear confident and certain in every step, every breath made. The darkness that snapped into place in men's eyes at clubs after sweetly rejecting them that came with a hot hand pressing against the lower part of your back.
In the years of working in the medical field, Mel had seen the look many times, but never like this - never when she was cornered and alone.
