Wheels and wheels and wheels, rotating fast, unstoppable, the word “tamquam” burned on their rims, millions of them in all sizes and shapes and ages, and suddenly pulsating underneath them, the unbearable thought jolting him alert: We haven't even kissed yet.

His voice was warm and heavy like the humidity, and he spoke with an Appalachian twang that reminded Ronan almost painfully of home. He had freckles on his nose and cheeks, and underneath the thin fabric of his t-shirt he looked solid and strong. As Ronan stared, Adam’s mouth twisted into a sardonic smile, derisive and sharp, accented by gleaming white teeth and a glimmer of mirth in his eyes.or: it's the 1970s. ronan needs a place to stay. adam's a grad student. they meet.

Summary
Things have been different, since the others left. They don’t have any friends to distract them from each other, now - there’s Opal, and there’s Ronan’s brothers, sometimes, but mostly it’s just the two of them. Adam takes more time off of work than he ever has in his life, cashing in long unused vacation days, refusing overtime. He surprises Ronan with camping trips and movie dates; Ronan surprises him constantly without even knowing he’s doing it, with home-cooked meals, with sewing up a tear in Adam’s work overalls, by kissing him on the back of the neck when he thinks Adam is asleep.
