The closer it got, the more Adam's chest would twist and the faster his heart would beat. A bead of sweat would break out on his forehead by the time it began growing taller and taller, reaching spindly pieces of blackness towards his frozen, shaking, dangling hand. When it touched him, he could feel Ronan’s pulse beneath his hands with haunting accuracy. Not the quickened pulse that came with bare skin-kisses-maybeidreamtyou’s, but the kind of pulse that had been accompanied by blood-bruises-screaming-ganseywakeup’s.

“Bloodsucker.” He greeted, leaning one elbow against the bar and crowding into Adam’s space as much as was possible when there was a long wooden slab between them, “How’s it going?”
Adam couldn’t stop the look of disgust from crawling onto his face, but he quickly tamped it down into an apathetic expression, “What do you want?”
“No warm welcome?” The man mocked.
“For you?” Adam responded? “Not likely.”
“Seems like everything worked out well for you.” The man rapped his knuckles against the bar and looked Adam up and down in a slow movement, “All things considered.”
If Adam could blush, he would have.
The first time Adam had seen this man, he hadn’t thought much about him, a little bit too panicked at that moment. But now that he was right in front of him, looming into his space, Adam realised that he was really quite attractive, which was infuriating. He hated it when mean people were attractive, because it always seemed like such a waste.
[AKA Adam is a vampire, Ronan is a werewolf, and their friends have to deal with their homoerotic tension for far too long]

He stood like a cactus in a desolate desert. He was once drained of all love, care, and happiness and then he was suddenly soaked in all of it; he felt he could store it beyond the warmth of a hundred suns. He wouldn’t thirst for water for another century, he thought, as long as he knew that he would be showered with love yet again when he waited. So, he waited. He waited for Ronan. He missed Ronan as if he were a missing limb. And God did it hurt. Standing in front of his school, waiting like a cactus ready to soak up the rain.
But a cactus is made by the harshest conditions, and the thorns it sprouts are a sign of that. That’s why he felt himself shrivel up at the sight of his father. The man who made him thirst for love and hid it from him all the same.

Knew this from books and movies, teen sitcoms and radio hosts, the few anecdotes that thread their way across the social fabric at Cambridge. Could spread the information on a graphic and say, "yes, this is the year most people drink." It had never been a question he'd asked or wanted to answer. For all his hyperactive thought, his nitpicking and overanalysis, his introspective scrutiny, he'd danced the outskirts of this dilemma by claiming age a hindrance. He'd set the doomsday clock and forgotten to hit snooze.—
