Summary
When Cardinal Thomas Lawrence confronts Aldo Bellini with evidence of Tremblay’s simony, their fight takes a different, unexpected turn. Instead of retreating into silence, Aldo lashes out, arguing that survival and action matter more than spotless moral purity. What begins as a bitter clash between two old friends (and most important people in the Church’s hierarchy) becomes the spark that once again pushes Aldo into the center of the conclave and onto a path neither he nor Thomas had foreseen.
Pulled between doubt and duty, Aldo steps forward, his campaign shaped as much by passionate speeches as by late-night plotting with Giulio Sabbadin, and the complicated loyalty of Thomas Lawrence.
